Step inside ... or maybe not! Alton Towers road tests its new 'ride' on stunned shoppers

"Common fears including heights, darkness and claustrophobia are a core part of the new attraction"

It's not what you want to see when you enter a lift - no floor.

This was the terrifying prospect faced by shoppers in South London during a test run of an upcoming Alton Towers ride.

From teenagers to motorbike couriers the video (below) shows all generations were taken in by the 3D optical illusion. One individual even tries to step around the "hole" by treading on the remaining "edges" of the lift.

Alton Towers set up the stunt to test people's reactions ahead of the opening on 24 March of its Nemesis Sub-Terra attraction where visitors are taken on an underground journey through a network of gloomy caves.
Mind the gap: Two shoppers edge their way around the lift

[Related story: Is this the scariest tree ever?]

Designers tapped into common fears when coming up with how the ride would look and what psychological reactions it would trigger.

Katherine Duckworth of Alton Towers Resort said: "When creating the illusion inside the lift we considered some our most common fears including heights, darkness and claustrophobia that are also a core part of the new attraction.

"The reactions of the public were fascinating.”

Clearly this is not 3D technology but just a picture of a gaping hole stuck to the floor. All very clever but not technology. Now what I'd have liked to have seen would be a life with a glass floor and metal doors under that that fall open mid ride. Now that would scare me.

        Great idea!

There is no mention of technology in the article. It is however a 3D optical illusion, which is what the article actually says.

The hole should only appear as the lift was going up, creeping across from one side with a loud crashing noise !!!!!

what a load of cobblers, you wouldnt even enter it if you thought it was a real hole never mind stepping round the outside like in the picture.

'Bottomless lift spooks costumers' ? - I see the Yahoo intellectuals have been writing this stuff ! Gawd - Yahoo really needs to get people with IQs higher than their shoe sizes.

Alton towers have stolen this idea from a horror film I saw a few yrs ago. Ive been racking my brains but cant remember its name. The lift scene at the beginning is exactly the same!

"It's not what you want to see when you enter a lift - no floor"
      Something more imaginative maybe?

I would like to see it for myself though :D

Customers should enter a perfectly normal lift only to find there is nothing above the second floor then swung around in a glass box 150 feet above ground . My partner has no fear of nothing but he used to work on demolition and was lifted in a cage (attached to a crane hook) to render a chimney stack 100ft in the air . As a practical joke the lads then swung the crane to hang him over a cliff in a force 9 gale and he said the adrenalin rush was massive . Of course being the nutter he is and wanting to turn the joke around he climbed out of the cage and hung from the bottom of it by his fingers which encouraged the lads to get him down P.D.Q !
