The £96,000 work of art was swiped from a Madison Avenue art gallery last week by a man posing as a customer who walked out with the watercolour and ink painting in a shopping bag.
The US Postal Inspection Service said the gallery received an email tip-off that the painting - Cartel Des Don Juan Tenorio - was being sent back from an undisclosed country in Europe, with a tracking number to locate it.
The package was intercepted on Friday at New York's Kennedy International Airport after the gallery, Venus Over Manhattan, passed on the email to police.
No reason has been given for why the painting was returned.
The suspected thief was captured on CCTV at the gallery, which was displaying the 1949 painting in its first month of opening.
The balding man in a checked shirt allegedly asked a security guard if he could take a photo before removing the artwork from the gallery wall when the guard stepped back.
He is thought to have dropped the painting into a black shopping bag and walked out the door to a main lift, which he used before escaping.
Police asked for help tracking the thief, described as white, between 35 and 45 years old, between 5ft 7in and 5ft 9in and with a receding hairline.
No arrests have been made.
