Strictly brawlroom: Riots erupt during Carnival samba contest

A samba competition turned violent during Carnival celebrations after hundreds of revellers started brawling in the streets.

The chaos started when a man jumped past security and ripped up the dance results at the Sao Paulo Carnival Parade contest just before the winner was announced.

Others followed in the madness by knocking over tables, damaging trophies and setting fire to dance floats.

The man was reportedly a member of Imperio de Casa Verde samba school, which did not look set to win the contest.

According to local reports, two arrests were made during the Latin festival, including the man who started the violence.

WTF?!?!?!?! the shockingly poor quality of behaviour matched only by the shockingly poor quality of 'journalism' in this report... background is clearly (and sadly) not a part of modern journalism...

It's an unfortunate incident, but please don't be so quick in judging Brazil. Not long ago there were riots right here in the UK and there are everywhere in the world, because some people are just stupid folowers of whatever. Be fair, though.

What may look like a riot is actually old-school punk rock slam dancing that finally made it to the Sao Paulo scene after all these years.

It all started out over a simple kick in the castanettes

Imagine what it'll be like at World Cup 2014 in Brazil, bad losers on the pitch, muggings in the terraces. Good choice FIFA

That's the result of a mix of a very corrupt environment (the carnival industry) with soaring summer heat and the typical intensity of Brazilian people. That's why I ain't going back to that hole of a country, despite it being one of the most beautiful in the world. Lots of money there now but it doesn't mean the people have evolved...

And yeah, as someone pointed out, that wasn't much of a riot by Brazilian standards at all...
