Suarez Says 'Sorry' For Evra Handshake Snub

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has apologised for not shaking Patrice Evra's hand before his team's match against Manchester United on Saturday.

In a statement on Liverpool FC's website , he said: "I have spoken with the manager (Kenny Dalgliesh) since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong.

"I've not only let him down, but also the Club and what it stands for and I'm sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.

"I should have shaken Patrice Evra 's hand before the game and I want to apologise for my actions.

"I would like to put this whole issue behind me and concentrate on playing football."

Ahead of Saturday's game at Old Trafford, defender Evra offered his hand to Suarez as the two teams shared pre-match handshakes, but was ignored by the striker.

Apparently angered by the snub, Evra grabbed the Liverpool player's arm but was quickly brushed off.

Uruguayan Suarez was then blanked by United's Rio Ferdinand , who in turn refused to shake his hand.

The club's managing director Ian Ayre has also released a statement criticising Suarez's actions.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "We are extremely disappointed Luis Suarez did not shake hands with Patrice Evra before yesterday's game.

"The player had told us beforehand that he would, but then chose not to do so.

"He was wrong to mislead us and wrong not to offer his hand to Patrice Evra.

"He has not only let himself down, but also Kenny Dalglish, his teammates and the club."

After Saturday's game, Sir Alex Ferguson branded Suarez a "a disgrace" and said the snub "could have caused a riot".

But Kenny Dalglish said it was "bang out of order" to blame his striker for "anything that happened here today".

However, the Liverpool has now backed Suarez's apology, saying: "Ian Ayre has made the club's position absolutely clear and it is right that Luis Suarez has now apologised for what happened at Old Trafford.

"To be honest, I was shocked to hear that the player had not shaken hands having been told earlier in the week that he would do.

"But as Ian said earlier, all of us have a responsibility to represent this Club in a fit and proper manner and that applies equally to me as Liverpool manager.

"When I went on TV after yesterday's game I hadn't seen what had happened, but I did not conduct myself in a way befitting of a Liverpool manager during that interview and I'd like to apologise for that."

True. It wasn't a genuine apology. Just did it to quieten things down.

Presumably 'Sir' Alex will now be offering 100+ apologies for all the times he's acted like an utter #$%$ in interviews (when he's actually been mature enough to grant interviews at all)

What is the point of football. A tribal game played by a lot of overpaid t***ers.

This is Playground Schoolboy nonsense, not even worthy of real adult discussion
      • G 3 months ago
Absolutely. If we really think this matters then we are all deluded.
I was in India recently and saw a man with no legs and one arm pulling himself along the street and begging. That matters.
Football increasingly has moved away from the real world.
Overpaid and immature adults prancing around bare legged and an unintelligent media navel gazing.
So utterly depressing and frankly so completely unimportant.
Had it's time this game and time to move on to someone a little more interesting.

It is not playground schoolboy nonsense, it is watched by millions and they get #$%$ load of money for playing and not for being animals. absolute disgrace and most disgustingly for people who downplay it.

"This is Playground Schoolboy nonsense, not even worthy of real adult discussion". Why are you discussing it then??

Alex Ferguson said "it could have casued a riot" what an indictment on the supporters of his club, shows the mentality of football supporters when something so trivial can cause such a reaction

I have no interest in football at all but the 'race card' does seem alive and well in this case.

On this news this morning this Evra character had to pulled away from taunting the fans at the end of the match, a quick 8 match ban would be in order it seems to me for being a cocky little pr*ck irrespective of skin colour.

The main thing to come out of this is the damage it has done to football, liverpool and united are both at fault here Suarez should not have misled his manager or club about the handshake and for Dalgleish to say he never saw the handshake incident at the post match interview is redicules as if someone wouldnt have told him what transpired during half time, but Fergie's comments about Suarez and Evra's action at the end of the game were totally out of order they did nothing to help the situation and the whole thing has been fuelled by the media baying for blood, sometimes a bit of common sense is all that is needed but common sense doesnt sell match tickets or news papers

I think we should encourage home grown footballers it seems we have more foreign players than English, if we encouraged our children to be more active instead of sitting in front of tv and computers we might have more interested in sports,

We should all have the right to dislike who we choose and certainly shouldn't have to apologise for it. I can recall a number of refused handshakes before matches, this race issue is starting to do more harm than good.

why all this shaking of hands anyway before a premier league match, just get out there and play the football, after all that is what people are paying to see ...

If I was unable to string two words together to form a sentence but was paid millions of pounds a year, merely because I could kick a ball about, I wouldn't give a damn what names anyone called me.
It started of with these idiots rolling around on the ground after being tripped, then it went to them wearing gloves to protect their delicate little hands, now they're shedding tears over a little bit of name calling.
      Grow up, you pansies.
    • Robin  •  3 months ago
Ok, he's said he's sorry so now they should let it be once and for all. I do find it interesting, however, that Alex Ferguson has the gall to criticize another club for continuing to employ a player when he picks Rooney and Ferdinand week after week!!
    • Mike  •  Bristol, England  •  3 months ago
If Suarez genuinely felt wronged then I think that it was more honest of him not to shake hand than to be hypocritical to 'look good'. Evra lowered his hand as Suarez approached him. I think that the whole business of shaking hands is just for show and meaningless.
