Fire crews rushed on to the runway and extinguised the flames in less than a minute.

Atlanta Fire Department Captain Jolyon Bundrige said four people received minor injuries but did not require hospitalisation.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the inferno is understood to have been caused by either a blown tyre, a locked-up brake or perhaps both.

Delta spokeswoman Leslie Parker said: "The plane will be taken out of service and evaluated by maintenance and they'll be able to determine exactly what happened."
