Web Is 'Fertile Breeding Ground For Terror'

The internet has become the most significant vehicle in promoting extremism, according to a report released by the Home Affairs Committee.

The report says the internet has become a "fertile breeding ground" for terror and is more involved in radicalisation than prisons, universities or places of worship.

MPs spoke to radical cleric Abu Hamza who said British foreign policy was a key factor in pushing young Muslims to radicalisation.

The radical cleric also pointed to a perceived lack of respect for Islam and a sense that the Prophet Mohammed was being mocked.

The committee's report said internet service providers should be more active in monitoring sites they host and that the Government should work with them to develop a code of practice.

A nine-month inquiry found the internet "was now one of the few unregulated spaces where radicalisation is able to take place".

But it added that a "sense of grievance" is key and direct personal contact with radicals a "significant factor".

The Government's counter-terrorism strategy should show that "the British state is not antithetical to Islam", the committee said.

Keith Vaz , its chairman, said: "The conviction last week of four men from London and Cardiff radicalised over the internet, for a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange and launch a Mumbai-style atrocity on the streets of London, shows that we cannot let our vigilance slip.

"More resources need to be directed to these threats and to preventing radicalisation through the internet and in private spaces. These are the fertile breeding grounds for terrorism."

A Home Office spokesman said: "Prevent [the counter-radicalisation strategy] is an integral part of our counter-terrorism strategy and aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

"Our new Prevent strategy challenges extremist ideology, helps protect institutions from extremists, and tackles the radicalisation of vulnerable people. Above all, it tackles the threat from home-grown terrorism on and off line.

"We are working closely with the police and internet service providers to take internet hate off the web."

They are not afraid terrorism, they are afraid of the average joe having a soapbox. They are also afraid of people holding them accountable and pointing out their lies. They are afraid of peaceful organisations becoming more popular than them. They are afraid of new movements like 'Occupy'. They are afraid that one of those movements may get too powerful and put them out of business. They are afraid of losing theri grip of control.

Then that would make immigration a close second for breeding terrorists. Do you know how many hoops you have to jump though to get into ANY other country. Except EU countries which if truth be told is a beano for the same industrialists who promoted the 1st and 2nd world wars. The same munts who caused the recession. If they DON'T want to dress like us believe in something other than their own country they have left behind, then I think they should be got rid pronto. They won't be happy until this is Syrian or other Arab province. WHY it's their funda(mental)ism and our greed. the ONLY reason this ISN'T being dealt with decisively is MONEY M-O-N-E-Y. Because if it isn't then it is ineptitude and crass stupidity beyond belief

Sorry I should probably, but don't remember if I do or don't? But reading other people's views don't fill me with enthusiasm, i just wonder why nothing is done, just apathy, treason and money grubbing greed!

The rest of the world, including Muslim countries consider the UK a breeding ground for terrorists. Because our political and media classes are invertebrates.

This was the Australian Prime Minister last year...

      Prime Minister Julia Gillard- Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Gillard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying she supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.. Take It Or Leave It.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society ... Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'
'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves in UK, Canada & USA , WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

I agree with Kevin. Parts of towns & cities have been made into "ghettos" & are breeding far more terrorism than the net. We're allowing these people into the country quite aware that they are planning to do us harm.
      • DEREK 3 months ago
I dont agree with Kevin- the internet is a very significant vehicle to persuade people into terrorism, and it helps with their planning. Please M15 look at the internet.
      • David 3 months ago
Derek, that has to be a joke, surely? "...M15 Look at the internet"? The internet is pretty big. Given there are billions upon billions of webpages, it might be hard to keep tabs on eveyone, and that's without personal email. Wise up.
    • Big G  •  3 months ago
Scare tactics by the govmt to let them censor the web, hundreds of numptys will say oh well if it stops terrorism please go ahead. What would make more sense is better foreign policy and some realisation about terror attacks rather then the repeated scare mongering.

Just be aware what your government really wants is not a consicious and informed public. What worries them is that those with above average intelligence able to sort throught the chaff on the net, can often get at what's really happening in the world; They do not want this, they want to censor you, and get you back on to mainstream television with sanitised news reports and distraction rubbish. Why do you think they pulled PressTV, which showed what U.S. and U.K. troops were really up to. Watch Zeitgeist 1,2 & 3 and also Kymatica and Esoteric Agenda, and remember the internet is our most precious resource right now, which we must protect at all costs.

They say the internet is a breeding ground for terrorism. ... Hello this country is a breeding ground for terrorism.....When we let certain people say and do what they like, allowed too say kill people from the UK, America and all the western world. The only reason the government let them do this is because they thought they wouldn't bite the hand that feed them. Remember " Hook Hand " Abu Hamza al-Masri.....So they did terrorism in this country anyway....We can't even get rid of Known terrorist that live here because the EU says we can't.....If we had a leader with some backbone he would have shipped him out anyway, or sent him to Brussels and let them deal with him..... So blame it on this and past governments..... Also blame the Peaceful Muslims...

How can they expect people to respect their barbaric ways of life, when they are not in their own country & commit mass murders with bombs etc.
    • Zac  •  3 months ago
Just another pack of lies so that they can instigate a clampdown and censor the web. These people are now getting too stupid for words. We can all see now what you are up to.

In Smethwick a Mosque with 100 foot tower has been allowed to be built 18 inches from a Methodist church Manse. When the Christians objected to the proposed building so close to the manse they were accused of being racist. As a Christian I do not object to someone following their own beliefs, however Muslims do not have the same tolerance.
One aquaintance converted from Muslim to Christian and has lost his business andhad death threats which the Police do not take seriously

MP's are terrorists, their sheer ineptitude and incompetence strikes fear into citizens, even fuelling false media to keep the masses distracted, divided and compliant. Another agenda to bring in more censorship of the internet. Who let Abu Hamza in the UK in the first place, politicians...
    • PAUL  •  Birmingham, England  •  3 months ago
Sounds like the govt using the excuse of terrorism to control and censor yet another aspect of our lives. Already the phone companies and ISPs have to keep all our texts and emails in case the govt wants to look at them. Big brother really is with us.

The breeding grounds are the enclaves and ghetto's that have emerged in our towns and cities. They get them young and radicalise them.

Instead of trying to achieve the impossible and censoring the internet, allow democracy to do what it's designed for and stop censoring ideas. People are terrified of criticising Islam either because of Muslim bullies who can't handle it, or because of the ridiculous laws against incitement to hatred of religion. Which means you've got a one sided conversation where the extremists can talk and their opposition can't. We'll all live to regret this, when people stop arguing verbally they start doing it physically instead.

The dogma of oppressive institutions, controlling ideologies, and prejudices against others – I believe most enlightened people find detestable. No human being (or system e.g. Capitalism) has the right to impose dominant ethical judgements on others or hold power over the natural and just freedoms of others (except where a person is infringing someone else’s freedom). The only role of the law is to uphold people’s natural and just freedoms. By all means hold to your own ethics and personal judgement, but don’t impose them on others. This is true whether for religions, Capitalist institutions, the State, people’s personal prejudices, creeds and so on.

As far as prejudiced opinion goes, the way forward is to engage in debate. I have spoken to Muslims in my community about homosexuality, and they have been open, considerate of my reasoning and point of view.
