Tesco Hudl smartphone to launch by Christmas

UK supermarket chain Tesco had great success with its own-branded Android tablet last year and is now looking to expand its line-up to include an OEM smartphone. It will release an updated 7-inch device in September, the Tesco Hudl 2, and will reportedly match that with a phone.

The handset could have the same impact in the UK as the original Hudl tablet too, as the BBC reports that it will not skimp on specifications. In fact, Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke told BBC Radio 5 live's Wake Up to Money programme that it will be comparably to the flagship Samsung Galaxy S5.

Like the Hudl, the device will come pre-installed with Tesco services but will be Android based. And while the specs will be at the higher end of the mobile scale, it will be "aggressively priced".

There are currently no official details on the exact specifications for the Tesco Hudl 2 tablet, just its intended release date, also revealed by Clarke. The original Hudl sold half a million units though, so it is unlikely Tesco will want to price it any higher than the £119 it listed its first device for.
