There's a lorry in my lounge! Lucky escape for pensioner as truck ploughs into his bungalow

A pensioner had a miracle escape after a lorry ploughed into his lounge - seconds after he had left the room to wash his hands.

Wilf Johnson, 88, was in his bungalow getting ready to go round a friend's for a cup of tea when the giant truck smashed into his front room.

The vehicle had veered across the road, careered into a wall and through two gardens - before crashing into the property in Horncastle, Lincolnshire.

The impact caused the ceiling to fall down - sending debris crashing onto the chair where lucky Wilf had been sitting just seconds earlier.

The OAP was yesterday taken to Louth Hospital where he was treated for shock.

Neighbour Ken Pickering described the noise from the impact as "like a massive clap of thunder".

He said: "Wilf was due to pop round to see me for a cup of tea.

"He was sitting in the lounge and then got up to wash his hands. Seconds later, the lorry crashed into his lounge.

"It’s a right mess. The ceiling came down and everything.

"If Wilf had still been sat there, I hate to think what would have happened.

    "He’s lucky to be alive."

The driver of the lorry, believed to be owned by a company from York, was also taken to hospital but he is not thought to have suffered any life threatening injuries.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 10am on Thursday morning.

The road was closed for several hours and anyone living within 200 metres of the property was evacuated because of a gas leak triggered by the accident.

Eyewitness Bill Aron, a councillor from Horncastle, said: "I was driving out of the town when 100 yards ahead of me, a lorry went straight across the road, straight through a wall and across two gardens -  and then crashed into the bungalow.

"I don’t know what happened but the lorry didn’t swerve or anything like that.

"It just went straight on until it hit the bungalow."
