Three Ways an Athlete Can Prevent Motocross Injuries

Motocross is a very extreme sport, where athletes often perform stunts and tricks on a bike. An athlete that is participating in motocross is likely to suffer an injury, especially to the hands, back, knees, and neck. An athlete is more susceptible to injury if he or she is new to the sport, and does not know the most important ways to prevent injuries.

Here are three of the best ways that an athlete can prevent injuries during motocross, which can help keep him or her safe.

    Learn How to Fall

It might sound strange, but it is very important for an athlete to learn how to fall, since this can help him or her prevent serious injuries. When an athlete performs stunts or tricks on a bike, there is going to be a time where he or she falls off of the bike during a motocross event, which is one of the ways he or she can become injured. An athlete will want to practice how to fall and land properly, so that the hands, neck, shoulders, and back are protected as much as possible. During a fall, an athlete does not want to put his or her body weight on one single part of the body, because that intense pressure can easily break bones. An athlete needs to learn how to balance his or her body weight during a fall, and learn some quick gymnastics moves to get out of a bad fall. An athlete should also make sure to relax his or her body during a fall, which is the most important factor in preventing serious injuries during motocross falls.

Always Stretch Before Getting Onto the Bike

Stretching is one of the easiest ways that an athlete can prevent injuries during motocross, and can help him or her actually perform stunts better. An athlete will want to stretch all parts of his or her body, especially the shoulders, neck, hands, and legs, since these are the areas of the body most prone to injury. An athlete can perform simple stretches 10 minutes before getting on his or her bike, and should focus on rotating muscles to provide more flexibility. An athlete can also perform overall body shakes, starting out at the legs, which can just warm up the muscles before a motocross event. It might seem like a common sense way to prevent injuries during motocross, but sometimes an athlete will forget to stretch, and this can cause him or her significant injuries.

Check the Bike Before Every Activity

An athlete will also want to check his or her bike before every activity or event, which can also help him or her prevent injuries. An athlete should be checking the basic components of the bike such as the brakes, handles, seat, and tires, which are all prone to breaking or becoming worn during a motocross event. Motocross stunts and tricks can be very hard on a bike, and an athlete might not notice problems with his or her bike until it is too late. An athlete should check the frame for cracks, and avoid riding the bike if there are cracks in the frame, which can cause the bike to fail mechanically during an event. An athlete will also want to make sure there is enough oil and gas in the bike, and lubricate any chains, which can also help him or her prevent injuries.
