Time Runs Out For Doctor Who Sidekick Gillan

Karen Gillan has left Doctor Who in "flames of blazing glory".

The actress ended a two-and-a-half year stint as the Time Lord's companion Amy Pond, along with her screen husband Rory, played by Arthur Darvill.

In the final episode the pair were killed off by weeping angels in New York, watched by a tearful Doctor.

Amy went to her death to be reunited with her partner, who had already fallen victim to the terrifying statues.

Gillan said: "All I wanted was for her to go out in flames of blazing glory and (Amy) definitely does that. I couldn't have wished for a better way to go."

She is currently in the US where she is making a horror film called Oculus.

Gillan said she was "emotional for about two weeks" after filming her last scenes.

It had been her "gut instinct" to leave the show but the decision did upset her mother.

She admitted: "My mum was devastated. She was like 'No, Karen I don't want you to leave'."

But she was able to pass on a few tips to her replacement, Jenna-Louise Coleman, before she left.

Said Gillan: "I felt wise and mature, which has never happened to me before."

As well as Oculus, Gillan is due to appear in Charlie Brooker's police parody A Touch Of Cloth.

She wants to do more science fiction and has insisted she will continue watching Doctor Who.

"There is no way that an episode can go by. I need to know what happens," she said.
