Trayvon 'Tried To Grab Zimmerman's Gun'

The man who shot dead an unarmed black teenager has re-enacted their fight, claiming the 17-year-old said "you're going to die" and reached for his gun.

In a police video, neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman gave his most detailed account yet of what led him to open fire on Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.

The recording, made a day after the February 26 shooting, was released by the defendant's lawyers about a week before his second bail hearing.

Zimmerman , who has been charged with second-degree murder, said he grabbed his gun from a holster on his waist before Martin could get it, and shot Martin once in the chest as they fought on the ground in a gated community.

After firing, Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother Hispanic, said he thought he missed because Martin did not fall over.

"He sat up and said, 'You got me. You got me, or something like that,'" Zimmerman said.

The 28-year-old said Martin had been on top of him, slamming his head against the ground and smothering his mouth and nose with his hand and arm.

The video footage shows two butterfly bandages on the back of Zimmerman's head and another on his nose. There are red marks on the front of his head.

"It felt like my head was going to explode," he added.

The case caused a nationwide furore after Zimmerman claimed he was acting in self-defence under Florida's "stand your ground" law, and police initially refused to arrest him.

Trayvon had been visiting a convenience store and was carrying only a bag of sweets at the time of his death.

The killing provoked weeks of angry protests and outrage across America. It prompted a furious debate on issues that included race relations, racial profiling and Florida's notorious gun laws.

Zimmerman's next bond hearing will be June 29.

His \$150,000 (£96,000) bond was revoked earlier this month after prosecutors said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, misled the court about how much money they had available for bail.
