UK: No public funding for new royal yacht

LONDON (AP) — What do you get for a monarch who has almost everything? Not, apparently, a new yacht, at least not one paid for with taxpayer funds.

That was the message Monday as a brief boomlet of support for the idea of providing Queen Elizabeth II with a new royal yacht to mark her Diamond Jubilee was quickly deflated by Prime Minister David Cameron.

It is estimated that a new yacht would cost at least 60 million pounds ($92 million).

Cameron's spokesman Steve Field said it would not be appropriate for public funds to be spent on a new yacht during times of economic hardship. But he said the government would be supportive of private efforts to provide a new ship for the queen.

He acknowledged that ministers have been approached over plans to raise donations for a privately funded vessel and that the government "would react favorably" to a firm plan.

"There are a number of proposals out there for a privately financed yacht," Field said.

Cameron has been contacted over the proposals and Britain's government could potentially play a role in facilitating the construction of a new royal flagship — even though no taxpayer money would be used.

"I don't think anyone is suggesting public money should be used for this," Field told reporters Monday. "There is a difficult economic situation, there are scarce public resources, therefore we don't think it would be an appropriate use of public money."

The idea of a new royal yacht was proposed by Education Secretary Michael Gove, who suggested in a leaked letter that the queen should receive a replacement for the Royal Yacht Britannia, which was decommissioned in 1997 after 44 years as a floating royal residence known to have been cherished by the queen.

He said the jubilee offers a "tremendous opportunity to recognize in a very fitting way the queen's highly significant contribution to the life of the nation and the Commonwealth."

Royal watchers who have followed the queen's long career remember that one of the very few times she has shown emotion in public was when she shed a tear at the decommissioning of the Britannia, which is now berthed in Edinburgh as a tourist display.

The ship sprang a leak earlier in January, requiring repair work.

It is not clear if the queen even wants a new yacht. She is in her mid-80s and her husband, Prince Philip, is 90 and was recently found to have heart disease.

Buckingham Palace officials said they would not be commenting on the matter.

Is there really a difference? At least royalty don't pretend to be commoners every 4th year for election.

In the eyes of God we are all the same and will judge us all the same way according to how we lived our lives whether you're a homeless person or a king. You cant buy a ticket to heaven with money but if its of any consolation the tickets to hell are free. ;)

I'm really not sure why some of you are criticizing the British government. Every official in this story said they are not and do not want to use taxpayer money to fund a new boat.

Even more than that, the article clearly says that they are not even sure the Queen WANTS a new boat. In the future, some of you should be careful. When you reach really far like that just to criticize someone, your shirt pulls up and people see your butt.

Well your #$%$ is showing, the government has other plans to give money to other countries from the taxpayer OK.

Here in the US, the queen has to settle for Air Force jets when she wants to go on holiday. It must be quite a hardship.
      • Roman 4 months ago
Not just any air force jet. Airforce 1
      • Stumblin Nate 4 months ago
Oh my gosh. Michelle Obama uses Air Force One to fly places? My god! I can't believe she'd do that! Nobody does that!

(For the purposes of this comment, please refrain from recognizing that other First Ladies have also used the same means of transportation, as well as other means. If you choose to read and accept this fact anyway, I take no responsibility for the loss of your high horse).

Actually, Roman, it's only Air Force 1 when the POTUS is physically on board. Otherwise, it's just a big airplane. I actually don't mind when she flys on AF One, at least they are together. But she likes to leave 4 hours or one day earlier all the time, and take a separate high-end luxury jet (with 40 friends and staff and secret service) that costs more than 92 million dollars, just cause she can.

The President, Congress, and Senate are the Royal Family of the United States. All have special pay, benefits, Health insurance, pension plans, bonuses that no one else is getting. I think our Royal family is much larger than Brittan’s.

King George V and Queen Mary (Tek) spoke only German when alone. Royals are German because in 1688 England deposed their English Catholic King and imported Germans to rule their subjects. Elizabeth II had a German father and a Scottish mother who lived to about 101+.

She shouldn't have gotten rid of the old boat. And $92 million could never duplicate what she gave up. There's bigger yachts out there.

The Queen and the royal family as a whole is worth upwards of $5 billion US Dollars. Not begrudging anyone being wealthy but how is it the responsibility of the overburdened taxpayer in the UK to fork over nearly $100 million dollars for a new boat? I'd say the priorities should be paying down their debt and sending all the middle eastern "immigrants" back to their "country of origin" who come to the UK and demand social services without ever lifting a finger to work for it. Margaret Thatcher had it nailed when she spoke of socialism..."Eventually, you run out of other people's money".

Why do the stupidest ideas always originate from the "educators"?

"The idea of a new royal yacht was proposed by Education Secretary Michael Gove"

I may be wrong here, but somehow I think Her Majesty could buy her own yacht. But then what would be the point of being a "Royal?"
    • Rich  •  Daphne, United States  •  4 months ago
Royalty cost England a lot less that politicians cost the United States, and since they have no real power, they do much less damage than politicians.

Shouldn't the aristocrats who benefits from royalty, and titles through the class system be able to afford their sovereign a yacht or two? These nobles and aristocrats should know that if their Queen and her bloodlines is disposed of, their titles and upper class privileged will also become worthless. They need to try more than the commoner who will lose nothing if the royals get disposed.

Ahhhh, that's OK Elizabeth. Just hit up Uncle Barak and his friends, they'll buy you a new boat with our taxpayer's funds in restitution for sinking one of Georges' boats during the Revolution. Thy're so good at giving our money to anyone but us.
