US Band Smashes Live Gig World Record

US rock band The Flaming Lips have achieved a Guinness World Record for performing the most gigs in a 24-hour period.

The band played eight shows, in eight different cities, culminating in a gig in New Orleans, thus beating the previous record of seven shows in the same period by Jay-Z in 2006.

Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne thanked fans for helping get the band through the experience, which started with a show in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon.

On a tour bus nicknamed Endeavour they then travelled through the likes of Oxford, Jackson and Hattiesburg in Mississippi before their final show in New Orleans.

They were joined on their trip south through the Mississippi Delta by several other acts and celebrities, including Jackson Browne.

Coyne called the record "an absurd joy".

Despite the effort of performing eight shows in 24 hours, the final gig in New Orleans contained all the usual fun and games of a Flaming Lips gig.

There were giant confetti filled balloons, large prosthetic hands shooting lasers and a disco ball.

The Flaming Lips are one of America's more unusual and entertaining bands, with theirr music often described as psychedelic.

They were formed in Oklahoma in the early 80s but did not have a top 20 album in the UK until 2002, with the acclaimed Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.

Four years later their most successful chart album, At War With The Mystics, reached number six.

In 2002, the band were named by Q Magazine as one of the "50 bands to see before you die" having built a reputation for their extraordinary live shows.

In the last 10 years The Flaming Lips have won three Grammy awards, while they were named Best International Act at the 2007 Brit Awards.
