Vigils held for school shooting victims

The Catholic Church in Newtown was packed on Friday evening as hundreds of grieving residents held a vigil in memory of the children and staff killed. With a population of just 27,000 many here knew personally the victims. Monsignor Robert Weiss baptised some of the children. He told the congregation that they lit up the community better than all the Christmas lights. Many other people who could not get into the church held improptu remembrance ceremonies to pay hommage to the victims. Our US correspondent, Stefan Grobe, says the shooting is certain to reignite the debate over gun control: “After one of the most horrifying days in recent US history, the night has finally taken hold of this small community. But tomorrow, when the country awakes, the same old demons that keep haunting America will be back.”
