    Villas-Boas Makes Winning Start

The new era at Tottenham Hotspur has got off to a winning start.

Andre Villas-Boas' first match in charge saw them beat Stevenage 2-0 in a pre-season friendly.

There was more positive news for Spurs fans as new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson scored on his debut. The former Swansea midfielder netted just ten minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Defender Jan Vertonghen played 45 minutes on his debut.

After the match Villa-Boas warned clubs interested in signing Luka Modric that he wouldn't be sold on the cheap. Real Madrid are favourites for the Croatian's signature with Manchester United and Paris St Germain among other potential suitors.

However, the Tottenham manager said the 26-year-old will only be allowed to leave, if the club's £35 million pound asking price is met:

"There has been continuous interest from three different clubs in Luka.

"But it is important for Tottenham to hold onto their rights. His situation will continue as it is until the price is right.

"It's important to understand his feelings. We have been speaking and I understand his point and he understands the club's point.

"Luka is an intelligent person and understands the club has to defend his value their values, rights and interests.

"It's a difficult situation for the club but we have been co-operative by openly saying we are willing to listen to offers.

"But the offer has not been met to what the chairman wants. If that is met there won't be any problems."

Villas-Boas' former club Chelsea also made a winning start to their pre-season campaign. New signings Eden Hazard and Marko Marin were both on target as the Champions League winners beat Seattle Sounders 4-2.  Belgian teenager Romelu Lukaku scored twice. Chelsea now head to New York to take on Paris St Germain, managed by former blues boss Carlo Ancelotti. Their clash will be the first football match to be played at the new Yankee Stadium.

Manchester United beat Amazulu 1-0 in the opening match of their tour of South Africa, with Federico Macheda finding the net.
