Incurable Virus Killing Thousands Of Lambs

A new virus is causing lambs to be born with deformities so severe that they die within seconds.

It is thought midges brought the Schmallenberg virus to Britain from continental Europe last autumn.

The foetuses of newly-pregnant ewes bitten by the insects often fail to develop properly.

At Mayfield Farm near Mildenhall in Suffolk, 75 of the 1,700 lambs born so far this year were affected.

"In a ewe that was carrying twins, she would have a job lambing it. You would have to pull it out," said farmer Clive Sleightholme.

"The legs were fused together and tucked underneath, its head was angular, not formed properly.

"They had undershot jaws and they weren't fleshed out properly but nearly every one was alive when it was pulled out but only lived seconds up to a minute."

The Schmallenberg virus, which is not thought to cause risk to humans, was first identified in Germany in November. There have also been cases in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Vet Toby Kemble has already seen deformed lambs at eight out of 10 sheep farms he has been to in north Norfolk this year.

"It's concerning for the farmer, from their point of view they are losing lambs and losing productivity but it's very upsetting seeing the lambs," he said.

So far the majority of confirmed cases have been in Suffolk and Norfolk. But farms in Kent, East Sussex, Essex and Hertfordshire have also been affected.

And in West Sussex the virus has been found not just in sheep but also cattle. Most lambs and calves are born in the spring so for many farmers it is a waiting game.

"It's a new virus so we just don't know what's going to happen," said Mr Kemble.

"It may be we have seen the peak already but what we may be seeing is the tip of the iceberg and it's just going to get worse and worse."

Farmers do not even have to tell the authorities although they are advised to provide samples. At one farm, a quarter of all lambs were affected.

With healthy animals selling for £100 each it means a serious financial impact.

Brings back memories of the government introducing mixy in rabbits and not owning up till decades later.

The fact that this new Schmallenberg virus has jumped a species - lambs to calves - if it can affect lambs and now calf's, that is very worrying indeed, the fact that it is Thought not to affect humans is not good enough, it must be investigated thoroughly by DEFRA, that is after all, what they are paid to do..

DEFRA need to act now, to ensure that every outbreak and death is notified so at least it may be possible to plot and perhaps predict the spread. Also trying to get a sample of the blood of the lamb or calve is vitally important to learn as much as possible about this virus and how it can be tackled, or if an antidote can be developed to protect the sheep and cow and thus the unborn lamb and calf.
Also the type of midge that is transmitting this virus, like mosquitoes, there are very many different types - clearly it has come from the continent, perhaps originally from further afield, so perhaps the Tropical Disease unit should also start looking at this as well on a cross reference in case it can cross to humans, or already has somewhere in the tropics and is known as something else - such things have happened in the past.

So come on DEFRA, British farmers are clearly up against this one and need some action, that is what you are paid to do by the government.

It hasn't jumped a species as it is similar to Bluetongue in its transmission which also affects cattle AND goats. It would be very interesting to know if any of the affected farms used the Bluetongue vaccine as I am wondering if Schmallenberg is a mutation CAUSED by the Bluetongue vaccine. BTV was developed rather too quickly to know all the 'side-effects'!

This is something I didn't know about, I've heard of Bluetongue, yes, but in the way you describe it, Thank you.

Sorry, Jenny, that should have read "But Not in the way you describe it"

Firstly I hope it doesn't escape into the human germline, second for the sake of these sheep they better find a cure soon.

Looking at the vast majority of replies it's clear many wouldn't be seen anywhere near a lambing shed. There is a virus out there. Spreading unfounded prattle does nothing to help those who make their living from the land.

scientists lab virus's! They want the small farmer gone so they and the multi national companies can control the food chains. This and others like this are suspect and a natural mutation is highly unlikely so fast.

The Illuminatii will stop at nothing to ruin everyone but themselves. Notice how their scientists invent new viruses that attack farmer's livestock but the Bankers just get richer and richer.

Much more likely the pest came on the animals in trade and then spread, all since the Conservatives again increased commercial Panic and cut back on the Customs and Agricultural checks and transport is not being encouraged nor searched to keep contraband at bay. Memories of Blair Cornwall foot and mouth, or foot in mouth might be the better description. You made it you are paying, Wake Up.

The farmers are ALWAYS feather-bedded by the Government and the EU, so it won't be long before they can claim any losses back in full. Why not do as the New Zealand government did, stop all the farm subsidies and let the farms sink or swim just like any other business.
The Common Agricultural Policy is a massive black hole in EU finances and is one of the principal causes of Europe's current bankrupt state.
In eastern England the large farms rake in huge sums from the government on a regular basis, whilst in Western Britain the smaller live stock farms are propped up by government / EU subsidies and should be amalgamated to form larger more efficent units - the same as has happened in NZX since the subsidy racket was halted.
If the UK taxpayer realised just how much money farmers get from them they would be staggered, and would be asking why this should continue unaffected at a time when everyone else is seeing their benefits cut.

Incurable? It's a new phenomena which has not been researched by the scientists in this country, so how can they refer to it as incurable?

Poor little innocent creatures. If they escape this virus they still have foxes ready to kill them if they can and if they escape the foxes then they will probably end up in a slaughter house having their throats slit by some barbarian. Unless they happen to live in Paul McCartney's fields or in some animal sanctuary, the poor innocents are doomed. Born to die young.

The deformed lambs will probably be turned into animal fodder and fed back to the sheep. What goes around, comes around!
