Netflix has released a trailer for Tim Burton's highly-anticipated Addams Family series Wednesday that shows Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia.

The forthcoming drama centres on the family's daughter who has struggled to find a school where she fits in - until her parents decide to send her to the creepy Nevermore Academy.

Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, is shown being driven in a taxi to Nevermore in the trailer, as her parents Morticia and Gomez (Luis Guzman) tell her how they met and fell in love at the school.

Zeta-Jones is shown with Morticia's long, straight black hair, dark lipstick and tight-fitting black gown as she tells Wednesday that she hopes she will make some friends at the academy.

The series sees Wednesday stumble across a murder mystery as she tries to prevent a killing spree in a nearby town.

But while her parents are full of nostalgia about their days at Nevermore in the trailer, Wednesday will also discover a secret about them as she begins to harness her own supernatural powers.

The first-look clip also gives a glimpse into Wednesday's disturbing world, showing that she was expelled from one previous school for releasing piranhas into the swimming pool to attack bullies who had targeted her brother Pugsley.

As well as the trailer, Netflix has released some early images from the series, whose UK streaming date is yet to be announced.

They show Zeta-Jones in a classic Morticia outfit alongside other key members of the Addams Family.

Christina Ricci was not shown in the trailer, with her character's identity still not known.

Ricci played Wednesday Addams in the 1991 film The Addams Family, where Anjelica Huston played Morticia, and has been confirmed for the Netflix series cast, but as a so far unnamed new character rather than as an older version of Wednesday.

Thora Birch had originally been set to star in the series but had to leave for personal reasons and Ricci is thought to have been recast in her role.
