Whitney's Funeral On Saturday In New Jersey

Pop star Whitney Houston's funeral service will take place on Saturday at the church in Newark, New Jersey, where she sang as a child.

It will be at the New Hope Baptist Church, a week after she died in her hotel room in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

The coroner's office has now released the 48-year-old's body to her family.

It was flown from LA to her home state of New Jersey and then taken under police escort to the same funeral home which handled the funeral of her father John in 2003.

The funeral home's owner, Carolyn Whigham, confirmed the service's venue, where mourners have left flowers, balloons and candles at the wrought-iron fence around the church.

Houston 's family has also reportedly considered an additional farewell at an 18,000-seat arena.

They are said to have discussed holding some form of commemoration at Newark's Prudential Centre, which hosts college and professional sporting events.

The church is located near an abandoned housing project and the train line leading to New York City.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Gregory Hanks, an actor who grew up in the neighbourhood and who placed a bouquet at the site.

"I grew up listening to her as a little boy, and to hear her sing, you knew she was special," he said.

Fans have also gathered at the funeral home, playing Houston's songs and light candles in her memory.

The pop star was under water and apparently unconscious when she was found in the bath by a member of her staff, and she had prescription drugs in her room, authorities said.

A post-mortem has been carried out and officials said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on her body.

But it could take weeks for toxicology tests to establish her cause of death.

LA deputy coroner Ed Winter confirmed there were bottles of prescription medicines in the singer's room at the Beverly Hills hotel where she had been staying ahead of the Grammy Awards, but would not give details.

"There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet," he said.

The LA police commented after widespread speculation about how the star, who had a well-documented battle with drug and alcohol addiction, died.

The entertainment website TMZ reported Houston did not die from drowning but a suspected "combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol".

It added that officials with the LA coroner's office had told the singer's family there was not enough water in her lungs "to lead to the conclusion that she drowned".

TMZ also claimed that some of the medicine bottles in the room appeared to be from the same pharmacy that was raided after Michael Jackson's death. This has not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was taken to an LA hospital by ambulance and later released. A source close to the family said she was treated for stress and anxiety.

The 18-year-old, who is Houston's daughter from her tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, had accompanied her mother to several pre-Grammy Awards events.

Looking at the criticism of those that criticise, we all make choices, we are all responsible for what we choose to do, I have been offered illegal drugs but chose not to buy them, that is life.

Sadly Witney was too weak to make the right choices and it cost her her life, great lady gone forever.

Nobody forced her, nobly fed them to her, it was her choice, nobody else's, in the same way that she chose to end her life ... so please don;'t blame anyone else, we have to be strong to survive!

Termite, I don't believe Whitney 'chose to end her life.' Drug addict or no drug addict, her time has just come.

I sincerely feel for her daughter and family. But those people at the Grammy's, please, it sounded so false I felt sick. Like they were part of her family. And the prayers, well, least said the better. These people are just saying words. They don't give a damn all they care about is themselves! They are a false bunch!

How can you "sincerely feel for her daughter and family"? Have you ever met them? At least the people at the Grammies can say they knew her somehow.

Wasnt it sickening to hear everyone at the Grammys trying to out do each other with how much of a loss she will be and how heartbroken they were. My god, get over it. Yes its sad, but so is everyones death, problem is she had it all and chose the wrong path to go down. AND she wasnt a little innocent kid lost - she was a mother - where was her sense of responsibility to her kids - she chose her (selfish) path.

Well I'm not going to die at 48 from a drug overdose because I have enough wits to not take drugs and drink to excess. The woman brought it on herself. She had enough money to get treatment for her addiction. She obviously didn't want to get better and the drugs and drink eventually killed her.

Sorry, but as much as I don't want to see anyone with her talent die at such a young age, I will save my sympathy for small children that have disabilities or develop leukemia or some other disease that is not their fault. Addiction is a self created problem, no-one held her down and poured the liquor down her throat of forced her to smoke crack at gunpoint.

So when these certain individuals die they want nobody to give a hoot either. Too full of self righteousness to understand the mental and physical battle people have with addiction and not just with celebrities but millions of people have or are struggling with.

She was found in the room with prescription drugs and not an unusual amount either so we are not sure of the cause of death yet.

A celebrity hardly lives a normal life and so many have fallen into the snare of addictions - The celebrity world revolves around money and power and what it can buy. Her drug taking could of started by tranquilisers or sedatives to calm her nerves performing live and went on from there. Elvis Presley himself fell to his drug addictions also but people respect his talents.
Whitney Houston is a sad case not an opportunity to tear her apart in death. That is bad character of the person doing such a thing.

Lots of us are going through things in our private life, and many of us without the finances to help us through it all, but in producing a child and accepting the responsibility of such a step, we give that child the respect motherhood deserves. Yes, a beautiful woman with a stunning voice, but also with a responsibility to lead by example. A success as a music star: a failure as a mother. Sad fact.

I think its really sad she died. Assuming that it was drugs that killed her, I think others should learn from it. However, we all make mistakes and have problems in life and have all different ways of trying to deal with those problems. What I find even more sad is the total lack of understanding from many of the comments posted here. Is this a true reflection of how people really feel in the world these days? R.I.P. Whitney, your music meant so much to me. X

Why is it that celebs can have their funeral within a week, and all be over. Our brother passed last June and it was 3 weeks, before he could be buried (no drugs involved), still no news of the inquest, but they get theirs same week - money talks !!!! Our death is just as hurtful

USA was born thru the teaparty politics of the 19th century. "No Taxation without representation". As an avid British and American Patriot i think the time has come too ask the question, "Hasnt Modern Technology allowed for a referendum"?
