Mother Held Over Four-Year-Old Girl's Death

Police in Manchester say a multi-agency review into the death of a four-year-old girl is under way.

The girl's mother, named locally as Chantelle Blake, is currently under arrest on suspicion of murder after the body was discovered at an address in the Moss Side area of the city last night.

Officers say Ms Blake, and her daughter Kaiya, had previously had contact with social services and other agencies.

Ms Blake was also known to police following an incident last year.

Officers were first contacted by Manchester Royal Infirmary ..

Her mother, reportedly in a distressed state, arrived at the hospital shortly after 7pm, and told staff of her concerns for the child's welfare.

Officers went to a house on Garthorne Close in Moss Side and found the body of four-year-old Kaiya.

Inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding her death are ongoing.

Police say they cannot officially release the name of the dead girl until she has been formally identified.

They say they are struggling to find the girl's father, who may be out of the country.

Greater Manchester Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the girl's death.

Chief Superintendent Stuart Barton, from Greater Manchester Police, told Sky News: "This is clearly a tragic incident and I understand there will be a lot of shock and upset in the community following the death of a four-year-old girl."

He said: "The cause of death is unknown at this stage and until the results of the post mortem it would be inappropriate to comment further.

"However, what I can say is that at this time, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident and I want to try and reassure our community that there is no reason for them to be unduly alarmed, although clearly they will be upset at this tragedy."

Officers say the 31-year-old woman they have arrested has been seen by health professionals, and they expect to be able to interview her this evening.
