World's scariest haunted house sees visitors kidnapped, gagged and covered in blood

The world’s scariest haunted house is a brutal experience which sees visitors kidnapped, gagged and drenched in blood.

McKamey Manor in San Diego, California can only accommodate groups of two at a time and is so hardcore no-one has ever finished it.

The ‘interactive horror movie’ also sees brave participants forced into a cage of snakes, as well as being forced to eat rotten eggs.

Despite the horrific endurance element, the haunted house - which can last up to eight hours - has a waiting list of more than 24,000 people.

Applicants have their backgrounds checked by founder Russ McKamey before they’re allowed to take part, and even a marine and adrenaline junkie have failed to complete the experience.

Visitors travel between four locations and have the whole experience filmed. Spectators can watch on global webcams, and the ‘haunt’ lasts at least four hours.

Due to its cinematic nature, no two visits are ever the same and the theme changes every year.

The whole project is run free-of-charge by Russ, who came up with the idea for the experience more than 14 years ago.

Running year-round, the haunt, though it has been described as the 'world's scariest,' is more about smoke and mirrors, Russ said.

A fan of such horror movies as Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The House On Haunted Hill, Russ, 55, said that the experience has been known to make grown men cry - each guest has to sign a waiver before going ahead with the haunt.

It has been reported that Russ and his girfriend, Carol Schultz, have spend more than $500,000 (around £311,000) to make McKamey the scariest experience on Earth.

Thought Russ describes the house as PG-13, family friendly and 'like Indiana Jones on steroids,' participants must be at least 21 and have no potentially dangerous medical conditions.

Russ said: 'Nothing is like what we do: It's like living your own horror movie.

'There are four different locations, which have been streamlined for hardcore fans, determined to make it through.

'I consider the people who take part in these haunts as my friends because I research and spend time with them before they go on the haunt.

'Everything is very interactive: the experience - and challenges - are to prove what you can and can't do.'
