Zooey Deschanel (Katy Perry’s 'Twin') Divorces After Two Years: Is There Something in the Water?

Okay, enough already! This is what you're saying as you read the news that actress Zooey Deschanel (and Katy Perry look-alike) is divorcing her husband Ben Gibbard after two years. These two-year couplings have become all the rage in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson and ex Ryan Reynolds only made it two years. The same goes for R&B singer Usher and ex-wife Tameka Foster.

The problem is that we look at these seemingly reasonable individuals. They tell the world they're in love. Vows are exchanged. They ride off quietly into the sunset of our minds…that is, until they announce they're getting unhitched.

In Zooey's case, the news comes while blowing up prime time TV with her new series, "New Girl." Splitting up when you're on top has been going around in Hollywood for quite some time. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise divorced at the height of her success in "The Others." Sandra Bullock was dealt a heavy blow from ex Jesse James nearly nanoseconds after she praised him in her Oscar acceptance speech.

Others have met similar fate. And now, here we have Zooey -- America's newest Silly Sweetheart "amicably" splitting from her partner of two years. That "amicable" part is something that we can sort of believe. Deschanel's whimsical nature has a way of infecting audiences. It was her collection of subtle quirks that added hints of color to M. Night Shyamalan's gruesome horror flick, "The Happening."

It's typically those "amicable" splits that have fans puzzled. Sure, we're shocked when couples with decades of marriage under their belts finally call it quits. Those are the ones whose separations have gradually happened over a period of time. Just how irreconcilable could Zooey and Ben's differences be after just two years of matrimony? We should probably ask all the other celeb couples who have split after the same amount of time.

In any case, you know how the disclaimer goes. Respect their privacy, blah blah blah. We'll certainly make sure to do that. But in the meantime, we'll begin preparing news headlines for the mention of a "new friend" with whom either party begins cavorting around town. We'll start sizing up their bank accounts and speculate on who gets the dog. Their matrimony will become a distant memory as soon as either one begins pumping out kids with a new mate. You know the routine...
