Forget David Cameron and Ed Miliband – there are puppies at the polling stations.

In yet another unexpected turn of events this election season, the hashtag #DogsAtPollingStations is now trending on Twitter.

From Golden Retrievers in Portsmouth to Giant Schnauzers in Bedfordshire, Britain's canine cuties were on display outside polling stations across the country. And where cute is, the hashtag is sure to follow. Here are a few of our favourites from the day:

The campaign period has been full of social media surprises this year. Arguably the most surprising: Ed Miliband was turned into a teen heart-throb when a 17-year-old girl started the #Milifandom Twitter trend.

Never one to miss an opportunity, supporters of David Cameron rebutted with their own hashtag, calling themselves the Cameronettes.

A Polish prince challenged Nigel Farage to a duel and selfies became the most popular way to engage with the younger generation.

Social media aside, it has been labelled the most hotly contested election in living memory. And the UK has until 10pm today to cast a vote. Or, failing that, to at least upload picture evidence of your pup at the polls.
