Could elderly billionaires soon buy healthy young bodies and graft their ageing heads onto them?

The grisly prospect could soon become reality if one maverick surgeon has his way.

Dr Sergio Canavero, an Italian surgeon who plans to perform the first human head transplant has admitted, ‘The final goal is immortality.’

He says that there has aready been interest from ultra-rich patients seeking to extend their lives by grafting ageing heads onto fresh, young bodies.

Dr Canavero says, ‘'You bet - there are a few funds working on prolonging life expectancy, and they are well-funded.

'These people came to me and said, "here is the money, but we want our participation to stay secret".

'However, I want everything to be transparent. Doing the surgery in a secret place on a secret island is not my cup of tea, to be honest.'

Some have branded Dr Canavero mad, or said he is a charlatan - but he says he has no problems being known as ‘Dr Frankenstein’.

He claims that the bulk of the operation can be carried out in less than an hour - and says he will reveal full technical details on June 12.

He already has a volunteer patient, a sevverely ill Russian man, Valery Spiridonov, who is willing to attempt the procedure despite the enormous and unknown risks.
