Our mothers are as diverse as we are, united only by the fact that they have raised, or are raising, children.
So assembling a list of ideas that might satisfy broad array of mothers is no mean feat.
Or so we thought. In our research, we asked friends – and our own mothers – what they’d like to receive, and were surprised in the unanimity of their answers.
“Posh hand cream, jewellery, handbag, posh clothes, wine (lots of wine),” said one. “A cocktail ring, expensive facial cleansers, decent pyjamas and a good book” replied another.
Essentially, they wanted the kind of luxuries that they’re unlikely to buy for themselves because life demands that funds be diverted to more practical endeavours like home repairs and school uniforms.
The items we’ve chosen couldn’t be less essential and are all the better for it.

A bottle of wine is an easy gift. A bottle of high-quality olive oil is a really thoughtful one for someone who is into their food. A drizzle can improve virtually any dish or can simply be mopped up with a loaf of great bread. This 5ive organic extra-virgin olive oil is made in Greece from sustainable Koroneiki olives and comes in a beautiful bottle that will take pride of place on her kitchen counter.

We all need to cut down on single-use plastic and this is probably the prettiest reusable water bottle you’ll find. Created by designer Edward Sowden for Danish firm Hay, it comes in an array of colours with contrasting screw lids. It keeps cold things cold and hot things hot, so can be used for her morning coffee too.
Otiumberg oval hoop earrings: From £50 for a mini single silver hoop, Otiumberg
Otiumberg co-founder Christie Wollenberg designed her oval hoop earring because she couldn’t find what she wanted anywhere else. Today, it remains a mainstay of the sustainable demi-fine jewellery brand’s offering, in plain gold or silver, as well as black onyx and white topaz-embellished versions too. They can be worn on their own or customised with an array of charms including stars and moons.

Scented candles are one of those things that everybody loves, but rarely buys for themselves. French brand Diptyque’s are especially pretty and we love this limited-edition version inspired by the glorious centifolia rose which is native to Grasse, in the South of France – and so-called because each bloom is believed to have 100 petals – though we’d gladly take it for the packaging alone.
Daunt Books fiction collection: £26.99, Daunt Books
Books are a difficult thing to buy for another person, particularly if they’re the type to tear through every major new release and have already checked Michelle Obama’s Becoming off their list. Enter Daunt, beloved Marylebone bookshop, which sells gift bundles of three recommended books. They come beautifully packaged and they’ll trade one title for another if you ask nicely. The fiction bundle is especially strong, featuring After the Party by Cressida Connelly, Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and Heather Morris’s Tattooist of Auschwitz.
