Ten flood warnings are in place in and around London as the capital feels the full effects of Storm Herminia. A yellow weather warning for wind was in place over London until 6am this morning. Despite this expiring, there are now ten flood warnings in place in and around the city as it fights the effects of Storm Herminia.

Yesterday saw Heathrow Airport cancelling some flights and torrential downpours across the capital. In other parts of the country such as Somerset, some residents asked to evacuate their homes.

“We’ve had an area of low pressure push in to start the week and this has already brought some hefty thundery downpours and some strong winds on Monday. In fact, this feature was named Storm Herminia by the Spanish Met Service. It’s in Spain where we’re seeing the greatest impacts. In the UK really, whilst it is causing some issues, not enough to warrant us naming it,” said Met Office Meteorologist, Alex Burkhill.

The majority of the flood warnings are in place over west London. This is affecting areas such as Uxbridge and West Drayton. However, there is also an alert closer to central London which is covering areas such as Richmond upon Thames and Isleworth. There are also alerts in place on the London-Surrey border for areas like Weybridge and Stoke D’abernon.

The south east of the city is also affected, with an alert over the Dartford Marshes and Crayford. Despite the warnings, this week is set to see an improvement in the weather forecast.

A Met Office forecast for London says: “(Wednesday, January 29) Dry start with some brightness. However, cloud increasing from the south with rain probably extending into southern coastal counties, possibly heavy in places for a time. Stronger coastal winds possible. Maximum temperature 8 °C.
