There was nothing like curling up on the couch with a blanket in front of day-time TV when you were sick. I'm sure we all remember those days we had off school, where we woke up feeling unwell and we'd spend the day watching TV, accompanied by your favourite home comforts.

Every household will have their own go-to regime when it comes to being sick. For me, I'd go downstairs and tell my parents I was sick, they'd check my temperature to make sure I wasn't trying to bunk off school (it was likely), then I'd curl up in front of the TV for the day, with my blanket and hot water bottle. Throughout the day, they'd come in and ask if I wanted anything, and it would always be a bottle of Lucozade and a tin of Heinz tomato soup that I would be told would "make me feel better."

We all have different memories of what our parents used to do when we were sick growing up. But, there are some definite favourites that seemed popular in most Liverpool households, when trying to heal a sick kid.

Lucozade is by far a popular favourite in most households when trying to make a child feel better. Over 330 people commented on our Facebook post to tell us what their Scouse parents used to do for them when they were sick growing up, and a good 100 of them told us that Lucozade was theirs.

Ray Martin said: “My nan always brought me a bottle of Lucozade! And my Mum made me a chuckie egg.” For the those not in the know, chuckie egg is a soft boiled egg.

June Bellis simply said: “Lucozade.” Stephen Kinney agreed: “Give you jugs of cordial or if you were lucky you might get some Lucozade in the orange wrapper (the original).”

It was a warming bowl of soup that Jane Dillon most remembered. She said: “Chicken soup on couch, oh and Lucozade.” Others also said soup was a favourite in their household, for me it was always Heinz tomato, however many people have said chicken was a go-to for them. Paul David said: “My mum would do chicken soup and a cold flannel on your forehead”

Lizzie Crute said: “Chicken soup, Lucozade and a comic.” Pay Aldred Burke also said: "Boiled water with sugar in a blanket and pillow on the couch with chicken soup for lunch." As did Nicola Edwards, she commented: "Buy you Lucozade and make you chicken soup"

Other top favourites was being made to advice to “stay in bed all day.” And, one I’d never heard of before, eggs. Carole Ruprecht told how she would be given mashed "soft boiled egg in a dish with butter," others said "egg in a cup" was their household favourite. Janna Dawson said: "Chopped egg in a cup," Colin Fairhurst had said: "Chuckie egg or warm milk with sugar," and finally Eileen Murray wrote: "My mam would put us on the couch with a blanket and a bottle of yellow lemonade from Scofield's and egg mashed up in a cup with butter."

Here is a list of ten of the top things you said your parents used to do when you were sick:

  • Give you Lucozade

  • Make you chicken soup

  • Make you some form of egg dish - dippy eggs and soldiers is a top contender

  • Tell you to stay in bed all day

  • Sugared butter

  • Cook you some eggy bread

  • Make you drink some warm milk

  • Lie you on the couch with a pillow and a blanket

This isn't mean to be a compete list, and everyone's family will have been different. Feel free to share your memories of what your parents would do for you if you were home sick from school in the comments section.
