After 100 days of Donald Trump's presidency the first lady Melania Trump is more popular than her husband in opinion polls, a fact he has publicly congratulated her on.

In what has always been an ill-defined role Mrs Trump, 47, has begun shaping what kind of first lady she wants to be.

She has been living in New York at Trump Tower while the couple's 10-year-old son Barron finishes the school year.

So far her engagements have included entertaining the wives of heads of state at the White House and Mar-a-Lago, and presided over events ranging from a governors' ball to an International Women’s Day lunch, an International Women of Courage Awards ceremony, and the annual Easter egg roll for children on the White House lawn.

Footage of her at the Easter egg roll reminding Mr Trump to put his hand over his heart for the national anthem went viral.

Mrs Trump has also visited with women in a shelter for victims of domestic abuse, with injured soldiers in hospital, went to a children's hospital, and took Queen Rania of Jordan to a girls' school in a poverty-stricken area of Washington .

She has hired a chief of staff and a fashion consultant, her friend Tham Kannalikham to redecorate the White House living area.

Fashion critics have praised the former model's composure and choices, particularly the Jackie Kennedy-style powder blue outfit she wore on Inauguration Day, along with her love of coat dresses, Christian Louboutin shoes and Gucci sunglasses.

Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a historian of first ladies, told CNN: "Melania Trump is, to my imagination, emerging as rather a Mona Lisa of first ladies because it is by her appearance and her posture that she seems to signal a strong impression. It's a centered quality, an independent quality."
