The 100 prequel series has been officially axed by The CW.

In development since 2019, The 100's season 7 episode 'Anaconda' existed as a backdoor pilot for the offshoot – anchoring the action almost a whole century before the events of the main storyline.

Carnival Row actress Iola Evans, Riverdale's Adain Bradley and Legacies star Leo Howard were all attached to the project.

TVLine reports that the sequel would've likely been subtitled Second Dawn, but The CW boss Mark Pedowitz recently warned that it's "not done in any way, shape or form. The discussions are still happening".

It's currently unclear whether or not it will be shopped around to potential suitors.

Jason Rothenberg of The 100 team previously detailed some of his ideas for the sequel itself, including "Lost-style flashback episodes" to pre-apocalypse days, in addition to space exploration.

"Clarke's great, great, great grandparents are up there on the Ark. Same with Bellamy, Raven and all the characters. I have a plan to get us up there and meet the ancestors. If we're lucky enough to tell that story, we'll meet Great Great Grandpappy Blake," he teased.

Second Dawn (we may as well call it that) joins a long list of TV series sent to the dumping ground this year.

Killing Eve, Peaky Blinders, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Holby City and American Gods are just some of the popular titles included.

Although Netflix's supernatural drama Manifest is on its way out too, fans can at least expect 20 final episodes on the horizon.

"Since its premiere on Netflix in June, Manifest has proven very popular with our members," commented Bela Bajaria, Netflix head of global TV. "[Creator] Jeff Rake and his team have crafted a beguiling mystery that has viewers around the world on the edge of their seats and believing again in second chances, and we're thrilled that they will bring fans some closure with this final super-sized season."
