A staggering 11% of Americans believe that HTML is a form of STD, according to new data.

A study from deals website VoucherCloud, showed that 1 in 9 Americans thought that the abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language - an online programming language - was a type of sexually transmitted disease.

Respondents were easily confused by a number of universal tech terms, with 18% identifying ‘Blu-ray’ as a marine animal, rather than a high-definition disc format.

A surprising 15% thought that the term ‘software’ referred to comfortable clothing, while 23% thought that MP3 was a robot from Star Wars.

What’s more, 12% thought that USB was an abbreviation for a European country, rather than a universal connector.

A whopping 27% identified a ‘gigabyte’ as an insect commonly found in South America, rather than a unit of electronic storage capacity.

Ironically, 61% said that it is important to have a good knowledge of technology.

According to the LA Times, 2,392 people aged 18 or over were questioned for the study, so luckily the embarrassing results only refer to a small section of the American public as a whole. The participants were not told that the survey was specifically about tech.
