Reality TV stars are really given a rough ride. In between all the glitzy showbiz parties and designer freebies, some of our favourite small screen faces are criticised left, right and centre and it's not cool, guys.

'What exactly is your talent?' the likes of Piers Morgan gets a kick out of asking. Well, since you're asking, let us tell you what reality stars do. They deliver TV gold. And that's why the Love Island finale helped ITV2 reach its biggest ever audience on July 24 as Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies were crowned winners – hear that, Piers?

Now, we're not saying you should invite them round for dinner, but come on, they're not that bad – and we can explain. Check out our list of controversial reality stars and why we're not ashamed to say we love them.

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag have made careers out of playing reality TV villains. They reduce their co-stars to tears and seem to get a kick out of winding other people up – so why do we love them so much?! Well, not only are they TV gold, but after their most recent stint on Celebrity Big Brother the couple accidentally let their guard down and their secret got out – they're actually pretty nice people. Oops.

2. Stephen Bear

Where do we start with Bear? He's another reality TV villain – only we don't love to hate him. We just love him! On shows like Celebrity Big Brother and Ex on the Beach, he got a huge kick out of stirring up drama before taking a step back and watching the chaos unfold. We felt sorry for his housemates – but come on, it's hilarious watching him in action as head troublemaker.

3. Katie Price

The Pricey isn't everyone's cup of tea, but we're not ashamed to say we think she's awesome. On a daily basis, she's given the most unimaginable abuse on Twitter, but she's never once let it get to her. Even when certain individuals have targeted her disabled son Harvey, she's never cracked. Instead, she picked herself up and fought back in the correct way by campaigning to criminalise online bullies. She's also been through hell and back more times than we can remember and it always makes her stronger.

4. Spencer Matthews

Spencer will always be our favourite Made in Chelsea star. We're not sure why, because he was pretty horrible to all our favourite ladies on the show, admitting to cheating on Louise Thompson and Lucy Watson. And there was the moment when he fell out with best pal Jamie Laing, too. But even with all that in mind, he still comes across as so bloody lovely (in between betraying everyone he loves, of course).

5. Charlotte Crosby

In reality, we're not sure we'd be able to handle a night out with Charlotte, who has a bad habit of wetting the bed and getting into punch-ups. But over the years, we've also seen a softer side to Charlotte that's made us fall in love with her. Not only is she actually a genuinely lovely person, but we don't know anyone who's as brutally honest as her about everything.

6. Lady Colin Campbell

Lady C is one of the biggest characters that has ever been on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! – but probably not for all the right reasons. Now, we're not saying we would have liked to live in the jungle with her (especially after watching her reduce all the other celebs to tears), but come on, she was TV gold. And her insults were legendary for a posh 67-year-old.

7. Scott Disick

If anyone else behaved the way Scott does, we're not sure we'd be okay with it. But for some reason, when he acts up, not only is it acceptable, but we love him for it. Only Scott could get away with demanding to be called 'Lord Disick' and casually insulting Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner without any apparent repercussions. How does he do it? Hats off to you, Lord Disick.

8. Gaz Beadle

If we were a reality star, the one person we'd probably keep our distance from is Gaz. He pretty much breaks everyone's hearts! From Charlotte Crosby to Lillie Lexie Gregg to Melissa Reeves to Charlotte Dawson – the list is endless. We honestly can't believe some of the things he's managed to get away with over the years, but he does because he's so bloody charming and has us wrapped around his little finger. Please don't ever leave Geordie Shore, Gaz!

9. Joey Essex

If we said Joey isn't the smartest tool in the box, that would be an understatement. The former TOWIE star's previously revealed that he still doesn't know how to tell the time, how many sides a square has, or how to blow his nose. Yes, really. Yet here we are questioning his intelligence when he's the one that's become a huge reality star with spin-off shows like Educating Joey Essex, his own businesses, and millions in the bank. We applaud you, Mr Essex!

10. Megan McKenna

Reality stars and drama go hand-in-hand – but none quite like Megan. Wow, where do we start? She made a name for herself on MTV's Ex on the Beach for her epic tantrums and bust-ups – and that's exactly why Channel 5 bosses decided to sign her up for Celebrity Big Brother. During her stint in the house, Megan threw a hissy fit like no other. We still can't get over some of the demonic faces she pulled in that Diary Room. Sheesh! But this is why we can't get enough of her. You don't mess with Megan McKenna.

11. Tiffany Pollard

She may be off our screens now, but we'll never forget Tiffany thanks to her epic "David is dead" meltdown in the Celebrity Big Brother house. Remember that unbelievably awkward moment when she was told about David (Bowie's) passing, leading to a misunderstanding around her housemate David Gest? You couldn't make it up. We all make mistakes, but few of us on this scale on national TV. Aww, we do love you, Ms Pollard!
