12 things we learned from Thor: Ragnarok's trailer

Thor: Ragnarok's trailer has felt a long time coming, but our first proper look at director Taika Waititi's Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is finally here.

The trailer gives us a glimpse at new and old characters fighting for the fate of Asgard and, from what we can see, it looks like things are going to get more convoluted than a season of Game of Thrones.

Here's everything we learned from the third Thor movie's trailer, from deadly goddesses to scheming Lokis.

1. Hela destroys Thor's hammer…

His Mjolnir mallet is supposed to be unstoppable, so Cate Blanchett's death goddess Hela shouldn't be able to hold it, let alone crush it into a million pieces.

How long until Thor gets his hammer back together? In the comics he's actually been without it for quite a while now...

2. And then invades Asgard singlehandedly

"Asgard is dead."

Apparently so as Hela then goes toe-to-toe with an entire army of Asgardian warriors – and as far as we can tell, she's doing it alone.

That's some pretty scary power going on there.

3. Valkyrie captures Thor…

As a fellow Asgardian, we didn't imagine that it would be Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie who captures Chris Hemsworth's god of thunder.

Shows what we knew, because he is clearly caught in her net – and dragged along the ground, oh the humility!

4. And she's working with the Grandmaster

This treachery goes double for her actually being allied to Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster, who apparently has sentient beings fight in the arena for his amusement.

What happened to Valkyrie that she would work with some blue-chinned arse to sell her countryman into slavery?

5. Loki knows the Grandmaster too

Tom Hiddleston's Loki can be seen observing the battle between Thor and Hulk in the arena (more on that later). Is he there to watch his stepbrother smashed to a pulp, or to plead for his release?

Whatever his relationship to Goldblum's Grandmaster, it's probably not that close, as they couldn't be sitting further apart on that huge sofa.

6. Loki is leading an army

Possible betrayal aside – how many is that now? – the trailer shows Loki swapping out his staff for a pair of knives and apparently defending fleeing citizens in the ruins of Asgard.

He was last seen disguised as Odin, and it looks like he might be continuing his redemption arc from Thor: The Dark World. Or maybe not – he is the god of mischief, after all.

7. Heimdall is lost in the woods

We're used to seeing Idris Elba's Heimdall guarding the Bifrost (or Rainbow Bridge, if you prefer) out of Asgard.

But he's taken a break from his duties to battle some sort of minion-looking monster in a wood. Could he be on Thor's trail?

8. The Valkyries (plural) are Hela's enemies

We know she's called 'Valkyrie' like there's only one of her, but the Valkyries are actually a group of warrior women on flying horses who lead dead heroes off to Valhalla.

In the trailer it looks like the sisters stage a failed attack on Hela, in what we're guessing is a flashback. Hela's domain is Hel, an alternative afterlife to Valhalla, so there could be some kind of rivalry going on there.

Norse mythology is really confusing...

9. Thor thinks he might get to skip his battle with Hulk...

We find Thor standing in the arena for "the main event", rocking a variant on his classic winged helmet and a mace instead of a hammer. Then Hulk emerges, and his Avengers ally is pleased as punch.

"Yes! We know each other. He's a friend from work."

Are you the god of thunder and naivety, mate?

10. But he is very much mistaken

Yeah, saw that one coming. It's Thor vs Hulk time!

11. Hela rocks her classic look

Our first peek at Blanchett had her in a more pared-down, goth look, but we're also going to see her in the classic, crazy antlered look, which is sure to please the Marvel Comics purists.

12. Skurge ditches his axe

Karl Urban is playing Skurge, an Asgardian also known as the Executioner who, despite his cuddly name, is usually portrayed as a villain.

So we would expect him to be allying himself with Hela in Ragnarok – although it's worth noting that in the comics he famously took up a pair of M16s in a last stand against Hela's army to allow his allies to escape Hel.

The glimpse we get here is a definite callback to that, so he may well be on Asgard's side this time.
