A council penalty for a driver discarding wooden furniture - described as "taking wood to the field" on Bonfire Night, on social media.

A photograph of the litter penalty notice from Stockton Council was posted on Facebook, with one user asking others if they had also received a fine in the days after November 5.

The ticket details the offence of littering under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, on High Newham Road in Stockton, dated November 19. The amount of the fine is given as £130, reduced to £90 if paid within a week.

The document read: "A female was seen existing [sic] a vehicle... The female then goes towards the rear of the vehicle and discarded white wooden furniture which came from the vehicle. The item was left."

The person who posted the photo said: "SBC (Stockton Borough Council) must be getting desperate for funds. Lass was taking wood for the Bondie @Hardwick if they saw her why not pull up and warn her". Another post asked: "Has anyone else got a fine threw [sic] the door from Bonfire Night for taking wood to the field?"

Stockton Council has responded to the posts, saying an individual was observed getting out of the front driver door of their vehicle, taking out broken-up pieces of wooden furniture and placing it on the verge. A spokesperson for the authority said that person drove away when enforcement officers went to speak with them.

The council said this led to a fixed penalty notice being issued once the vehicle had been traced. The authority said the fine had now been paid in full.
