The scent of a reed diffuser lasts longer than a candle, while the lack of flame makes them safer around the home. The concentrated essential oil usually comes in a glass bottle, some of which you can refill, and the aroma is diffused by rattan reeds. From energising fragrances to heady florals in pretty bottles, the range can be overwhelming. Fortunately, we’ve tried these at home to bring you our favourites.
First, a few tips. Narrow-necked bottles should mean the oil is diffused through the reeds rather than straight into the air. Your diffuser should last for a few months, but if the smell starts wearing off, give the bottle a gentle shake or turn the reeds the other way up, remembering to pop some paper underneath in case you spill a few drops in the process.
Cowshed Moody Cow Balancing Room Diffuser: £39, Cowshed
Cowshed makes six different diffusers, each creating a different mood. This one is uplifting, thanks to the invigorating blend of rose, geranium, blossom and frankincense. If you’ve had a bad day, this pretty glass bottle with white etching is a bit of a pick-me-up. The 250ml of all-natural oils is a generous size and lasts about three months.

Thanks to the simple round glass bottles and the silver neck, The White Company’s signature diffusers are understated enough to blend into any room – and the scents are subtly evocative. This one with notes of bergamot, orange and amber combined with coconut, vanilla and almond will make you think of exotic holidays in the sun.
Neom Happiness Reed Diffuser: £38, Neom
Neom was started by a former editor of Glamour magazine, and makes some of the best scented candles and reed diffusers around. This one is made from seven essential oils including neroli, mimosa and lemon, all of which combine to cheer you up if you’re tired or stressed. Like Cowshed’s diffuser, it’s all about positive vibes, but it’s fresher, and less rich.
Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia Scent Surround Diffuser: £62, Jo Malone
Some diffusers can be overly sweet and overwhelming, especially when they’re fruity or give off floral scents such as ripe pear and white freesias. But this one by perfumier Jo Malone is perfectly balanced, with the amber, patchouli and woods bringing a softness to this sumptuous fragrance. The aroma evokes late summer, early autumn. The dark reeds and simple bottles make these super-elegant, too.
Next Spa Retreat Country Luxe Diffuser: £18, Next
This diffuser will leave your home smelling like a spa – surely, a welcome aroma. It lasts ages too, without the scent being too strong. Lavender and geranium are the dominant aromas, but you also get ylang at the heart and cedarwood at the base. Ideal for bathrooms, the bottle comes in attractive neutrals.
Noble Isle Willow Song Fine Fragrance Reed Diffuser: £39, Noble Isle
If you’re after something romantic, this gets our vote. It’s gentle, sensual and enticing, with top notes of rose petal and ivy, along with more subtle hints of watermelon and lily of the valley and base notes of cedarwood and musk. It’s beautifully packaged too, in a posh black box. The frosted glass bottle has a black rim, while the black reeds look glamorous and contemporary.
Aldi Luxury Reed Diffuser, No.1 Lime, Basil & Mandarin: £3.99, Aldi
Most reed diffusers under a tenner aren’t much cop – the scents can be overpowering, sickly or synthetic, or worse, all three. But this is a corker, with a heady mix of herbs and summer fruits that smells as sophisticated as many at five times the price. The bottle design mimics more expensive diffusers, too.
True Grace Black Lily Diffuser: £50, John Lewis
This, from family-owned True Grace, is a deep and heady but not overpowering fragrance. With its floral notes of violets and jasmine as well as wafts of citrusy bergamot and woody sandalwood. it's perfect for a bedroom. The gorgeous grey glass apothecary-style bottle, however, is a welcome and understated addition to any room.
Natural Spa Factory Chavant Diffuser: £32, Natural Spa Factory
There’s a Mediterranean vibe going on with this summery diffuser, which has a fabulous combination of pomelo and bergamot top notes, with florals at the heart and a base of cedar, musk and sandalwood. Pronounced ‘sha-vohn’, it’s luxurious without being intense, light but not too subtle. We also like the way you fill up the apothecary bottle yourself, using the refill liquid.
Lilou et Loic Moroccan Wood Fine Leather Room Diffuser: £50, Lilou et Loic
This masculine scent has won several industry awards. With top notes, you get herby aromas of thyme and lavender, then the depth starts coming in with the heart notes of Moroccan wood accord and orris. But it’s the base notes where the most is going on, with patchouli, labdanum, cedarwood, birch, incense and amber. The result is opulent and oriental, silky and leathery and the perfume-inspired bottle sets it all off beautifully.
Skandinavisk Fjord Scent Diffuser: £40, Selfridges
It’s time to get the Scandi-based, British-run company on your home-fragrance radar. This blend of wood, wild berries and raspberry flowers is said to be evocative of Norwegian forests, orchards and waterfalls. We say it’s an energising but subtle-smelling scent in a bottle that will look cooler-than-average on the shelf.

For a real wow factor, this imaginative, unusual and colourful reed diffuser is a stunner. Part of the popular oil range, which also includes candles and a vase, the glass has been warped and coloured to look like oil on water, an effect it achieves beautifully. The scent is woody and revitalising, with notes of cedar, styrax and tar.
Wax Lyrical Lakes Reed Diffuser: £19.99, Wax Lyrical
Wax Lyrical has gone all out to evoke peaceful and clear blue lakes with this diffuser. With fresh cotton and bergamot, it will give your home a serene, fresh ambience, although the bottle doesn’t look as elegant as some.
The Verdict: Reed diffusers
Cowshed’s six reed diffusers are all stunners, although our favourite is the balancing one, which is wonderfully uplifting. For something cheaper, The White Company Seychelles Diffuser recreates the feeling of a tropical holiday at home.
