14 more Transformers stories in development confirms Michael Bay

Michael Bay has revealed that the ‘Transformers’ writing team has outlined FOURTEEN new “stories” for the franchise.

The director announced the news during a ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ preview event at London’s Cineworld IMAX on Leicester Square that debuted new footage from the summer blockbuster to a cinema packed with dedicated fans.

Bay, sporting a Boba Fett t-shirt, appeared in a pre-recorded segment ahead of 30 minutes of unfinished footage announcing that the new stories had been thrashed out during the development process for ‘The Last Knight’ to lay the groundwork for the future of the series. One of those stories is expected to be the Bumblebee spin-off directed by ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ helmer Travis Knight.

He reiterated that ‘The Last Knight’ was to be his swan song, promising fans he was going out on a high. Bay, the director of all five ‘Transformers’ films to date, also announced that he’d shot this summer’s ‘The Last Knight’ natively in IMAX 3D using bespoke cameras, promising that he is “keeping 3D alive”.

The preview showed a number of previously unseen clips from the film including footage from the film’s Arthurian prologue (possibly featuring Stanley Tucci as Merlin), scenes including Isabela Moner’s Izabella and Canopy, plus Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager who gets spirited away to Britain by Anthony Hopkins’ Transformer/manservant Cogman.

The ‘Transformers’ writing room that convened in summer 2015 is thought to be led by Akiva Goldsman (‘A Beautiful Mind’) and include Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (‘Iron Man’); Ken Nolan (‘Black Hawk Down’); Zak Penn (‘Ready Player One’); Lindsey Beer (‘Barbie’); Geneva Robertson-Dworet (‘Tomb Raider’); Christina Hodson (‘Bumblebee’); Steven DeKnight (‘Daredevil’, ‘Smallville’); Jeff Pinkner (‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, ‘Lost’); and Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (‘Ant-Man’).

“We’ve got a work space that is beautifully production designed to be immersive with a strong sense of the franchise history,” Goldsman told Deadline in 2015. “We will look at the toys, the TV shows, the merchandise, everything that has been generated by Hasbro, from popular to forgotten iterations, and establish a mythological time line. It has been designed with a lot of visual help, toys, robots, sketches and writers and artists. After that super saturation, the writers will figure out not one, but numerous films that will extend the universe.”
