£144m forward line, Tonali starts and bold full-back call - Newcastle's told their strongest XI

Newcastle United have made a positive start to the campaign without playing their highest level. Unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season with two wins and a draw from their opening three games, the Magpies are right among the early European contenders.

Eddie Howe's side narrowly missed out on European football last season as a result of Manchester United's FA Cup triumph, but the lack of continental football might work out in their favour, as it did in their impressive 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Newcastle would like to think they have a stronger squad than they did in that Champions League qualification campaign, but what is Howe's strongest XI when everyone is fit?

We asked Chronicle Live readers for their thoughts on what the Magpies' strongest XI is when everyone is fit and it make for interesting reading.

Unsurprisingly, Nick Pope received the nod in goal, having been a mainstay in Howe's starting line-up since arriving at St. James Park. However in defence, black and white supporters have made a number of big calls.

The centre-half pairing of Sven Botman and Fabian Schar played a key part in that Champions League qualification campaign and occupy the two centre-back slots in the supporter starting XI. But it gets interesting at full-back.

There was no space at right-back for veteran defender Kieran Trippier, with Tino Livramento given the nod ahead of him, while fellow former Chelsea academy graduate, Lewis Hall, was voted in at left-back. The two young full-backs began to establish themselves in the Magpies starting XI last season and have been backed to kick on, with no place for Dan Burn in the strongest XI.

In midfield, there are few surprises with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton starting in the engine room, while Sandro Tonali joins them after his ten month ban for betting. Supporters believe that midfield trio is the best Howe has at his disposal and we could well see them line-up alongside one another for the upcoming game against Wolves.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak are the first names on the Newcastle team-sheet at the time of writing and it's no surprise to see supporters select them in the strongest XI. But it is interesting to see Gordon picked out on the right-hand side of the pitch, with Harvey Barnes selected on the left-wing, making up a front three worth £144m.

Howe has done exactly that in recent weeks as he looks to get the most out of his Newcastle attack, with Jacob Murphy and Miggy Almiron left waiting in the wings.

Newcastle United supporters' strongest XI: Pope; Livramento, Botman, Schar, Hall; Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tonali; Barnes, Isak, Gordon
