Another friend or family member is expecting, which means another gift to buy. You may be the sort of person who delights in browsing the aisles for cute baby gifts (this is us).

Alternatively, you may prefer to email over an Amazon voucher and hope you spelled their name right. Whatever you do, all gifts will be appreciated – but, some will be appreciated more than others.

To make sure you get it right, think about the parents you are buying for (new babies aren’t too judgemental, thank goodness).

If it is a first baby, they may need practical gifts. If it is a sibling, then they may prefer a luxury treat that they wouldn’t splash out on themselves. If you really want to earn brownie points and show that you’ve been paying attention – opt for a personalised gift.

Izabela Minkiewicz, owner of baby boutique Blue Almonds agrees: “There's nothing more special than giving (and receiving) something which feels unique. Personalised gifts are always very popular."

We tested a range of products with different purposes and price points, looking for cuteness, value, durability and swoon-factor.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
