17 cities and towns in England face up to 15 inches of snow this weekend, the Met Office has warned. Ahead of Storm Bert, wintry showers will continue to impact parts of the UK on Friday, particularly exposed areas in the north. As a brief ridge of high pressure moves in though, Friday will bring a drier and brighter end to the week. It will still feel very chilly, with maximum temperatures of just 7 or 8 degrees Celsius.
Derby, Nottingham, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Blackburn, Salford, Stoke, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Newcastle, Sunderland are all at risk. The Met Office yellow weather warning explains: "Outbreaks of rain will spread northeastwards on Saturday, preceded by a spell of snow across parts of northern England and Scotland.
"Whilst snow will become increasingly confined to higher elevations with time, there is the chance of a transient period of snow to low levels in some areas, with perhaps as much as 5-10 cm accumulating in places, especially the Vale of York, before turning back to rain.

"Temporary snow accumulations of 10-20 cm are possible on ground above 150m, with perhaps as much as 20-40 cm above 300m." Jason Kelly is a Met Office Chief Meteorologist and said: “Storm Bert starts to arrive overnight on Friday and into Saturday, initially over Northern Ireland.
"As we go through the first part of Saturday morning, it will start to show its hand across Scotland, north Wales and northern England, with the potential for some heavy snowfall, especially over higher ground. Warnings are in place, including an amber warning for snow and ice for parts of Scotland.”
Jason said: “Heavy rainfall will affect much of the UK this weekend. Rain is expected to develop during Saturday morning across southwest and southern England, becoming particularly heavy and persistent overnight and into Sunday."
