17 Devon beaches hit with sewage alerts after heavy rain
Numerous beaches in Devon have been hit with sewage alerts after a significant amount of rain fell across the region this week. Charity campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) highlighted 17 separate locations on its map where sewage has been discharged into the sea after persistent heavy rain fell in Devon on Thursday, September 6.
The map, built from SAS' free Safer Seas & Rivers Service (SSRS) app, tracks real-time sewage discharge and pollution risks. Dozens more alerts have been issued across the UK ahead of more anticipated downpours later today.
A weather warning is still in place over North Devon until 11.59pm tonight, with more heavy rain, potential flooding and thunderstorms predicted in the area. The wet weather has also caused several rivers in Devon to rise, sparking flood alerts in the county. The effects of the bad weather could be worsened by more rain today.

Sewage discharge is common after heavy rainfall, as storm overflows are used to prevent drains being overwhelmed. However, it means that sewage discharge is leaked into the sea.
Sewage pollution alerts are in place at 17 beaches in Devon. At every spot, SAS says: "Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours."
