Surrey is expected to face 17 hours of heavy rain, forecasters have warned. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the entire county.

The alert warns of travel disruption and flooding across Surrey. It will take place from 5pm on Thursday (September 26) to 10am on Friday (September 27). The warning suggests that fast-flowing or deep floodwater could cause "a danger to life".

The Met Office also warns residents of a "slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses". The warning continues: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellation to train and bus services.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads."

Providing more information, the Met Office says: "Whilst some areas will miss the worst, areas of heavy, showery rain are expected to become widespread across a swathe of England and Wales during Thursday evening and on into Friday morning. There is some uncertainty in the details, but some locations may see up 20-30 mm of rain in 2-3 hours and perhaps 40-60 mm in 4-6 hours

"Lightning and strong, gusty winds may be additional hazards, especially in southwest coastal areas. Given the recent very wet weather, this will bring the potential for further flooding and transport disruption."

London & South East England weather forecast

Today:

A cloudy, unsettled day with outbreaks of showery rain soon developing through the morning, these perhaps merging into longer spells of persistent rain, which at times may be heavy. Winds mostly light, but breezy at times towards the coast. Maximum temperature 17 °C.. Into tonight, initial rain moving away into the evening, with many places being largely dry overnight, although there is a risk of the odd shower developing early Thursday morning. Winds largely light. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Thursday:

Cloudy throughout on Thursday, with outbreaks of rain at times, perhaps becoming persistent and heavy later in the day, although this is low confidence. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Friday sees a change to a brisk northerly wind, with isolated showers and sunny spells. Drier over the weekend with lighter winds, but an isolated shower is still possible.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Brent Walker said: “Things will be turning decidedly cooler into the weekend, with frost likely for much of the UK overnight on Friday and a more autumnal feel to daytime temperatures.

“A north-westerly flow of air is developing, bringing cooler Arctic air over the UK and dropping temperatures into the weekend before the next low pressure system pushes across the country from the North Atlantic. This will bring the potential for some very wet and windy weather late on Sunday and into the start of next week, though there is much detail to be determined on the exact conditions so stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
