180 tonnes of hay catches fire in Rochford
180 tonnes of hay erupted into flames last night. Firefighters rushed to the scene of the fire on Lambourne Hall Road in Rochford at around 8pm yesterday evening (Sunday, September 29).
A large haystack measuring at 180 tonnes had caught fire and due to windy conditions, the fire burnt through the haystack quickly. Firefighters remained on the scene overnight and are currently allowing the haystack to burn under control.
Firefighters from Rochford, Rayleigh Weir and two crews from Southend were at the scene. They have remained there to ensure the haystack 'burns safely'.

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters remained at the scene overnight and are continuing to let the haystack burn under control. One crew is in attendance. Firefighters from Rochford, Southend (two) and Rayleigh Weir are currently tackling a large haystack fire in Rochford. Crews were called to Lambourne Hall Road at 8.14pm."
Station Manager Rick Williams said: "Crews are currently working to protect the surrounding area, it is approximately 180 tonnes of hay bales alight.
"Due to the windy conditions the fire is burning through the haystack quite quickly. We are looking to scale this incident down soon but crews will likely remain here overnight to make sure the haystack burns out safely."
