A branch of the far-right AfD party in Germany has cancelled a party conference because of security threats from ‘aggressive antifa groups’.

The North Rhein-Westphalian part of the anti-immigration ‘Alternative for Deutschland’ party cancelled their conference this weekend in Wiehl, citing security reasons.

The AfD said that is has evidence that possibly violent anti-fascist protesters could mix among peaceful demonstrators.

A number of anti-right-wing groups had been planning peaceful protests to coincide with the conference with up to 1,500 participants.

But a police spokesperson said they were ‘surprised’ by the decision, and that ‘the execution of the planned event of the AfD was never at any time at risk’, according to the Berlin Morning Post

The nationalist party entered parliament for the first time in Germany in the September election, winning 12.6% of the total vote and 90 seats.

Their campaign capitalised on anti-Islam and anti-immigration sentiment in Germany, and was accused of being coloured with Nazi overtones.

Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to cap the number of immigrants arriving in Germany at 200,000 as a concession as she formed a new coalition government after the election.

Around a thousand protesters took to the streets of Berlin after Germany’s election results came in, revealing huge gains for the party.

Riot police formed a human chain as demonstrators chanted ‘Nazi pigs’, ‘say it loud, say it clear refugees are welcome here’, and ‘the entire Berlin hates the AfD’.
