The BRIT Awards used to mean raucous rock n' roll antics and drunken debauchery wrestled into a two-hour live show on ITV.

But nowadays it's more synonymous with having emoji for just about everything and One Direction winning awards every year, even though they broke up a while back.

However, Matt Healy of The 1975 reached back into the depths of time to recreate a little bit of the rebel rouser spirit from the days of yore.

While dressed as a dishevelled Victorian vampire, the lead singer piled under a table for a cheeky smoke like he was living in 2006's pre-smoking ban Britain.

There's no smoking indoors now Matt, you bloody maniac.

Their cheeky antics, which were filmed by the band's bassist Ross MacDonald, and all this bloomin' savagery meant the #LADZ missed Stormzy and Ed Sheeran teaming up for perhaps the best performance of the entire night.

During the show, the guys picked up the award for Best British Band and performed their track 'The Sound', which confused the internet when it appeared the screen had been hacked with bold text making passive aggressive digs at the band.

But it turns out this was merely a reference to the music video for the song, rather than the BRITs suddenly changing its mind about crowning them winners.

Elsewhere at the BRITs, Robbie Williams's performance was blighted by errors, Skepta's was muted and Katy Perry had an awkward interview. But hey, it wouldn't be the BRITs without something awkward happening.

Head this way to see our official ranking of all the performances last night, as well as all the bits you might have missed while you were potentially under a table having a cheeky fag.
