England have successfully consolidated top spot in Group G with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Lithuania, courtesy of goals from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy.

Gareth Southgate's Three Lions lead their group with 13 points from their opening five games and are on course to secure a place at the 2018 World Cup.

The usual contenders are all flying high elsewhere around Europe, with France in control of Group A and Portugal pushing Switzerland in Group B.

World Cup holders Germany are going strong in Group C while Spain are level at the Group of G with rivals Italy.

Robert Lewandowski is spear-heading Poland in Group E, Spain and Italy are on course in Group G, while Belgium (H) and Croatia (I) are sitting pretty as well.

The group winners all qualify for the tournament, while the eight-best group runners-up head into a playoff round in November.

The four winners of the two-leg ties will qualify for the World Cup.
