2024 Oscar Nominations Snubs and Surprises
The 2024 Oscar nominations have sure made waves.
The nominations were announced January 23 by Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid in a livestream event. While the expected frontrunners like “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” received their fair share of nominations, there were still a slew of surprises (and snubs!) that left cinephiles scratching their heads.

Most notably was “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig being completely ignored in the Best Director category. While only three female directors have ever won the title, Gerwig’s history-making blockbuster film was expected to receive a Best Director nomination. Instead, Gerwig and partner Noah Baumbach received a Best Adapted Screenplay nod, as well as Best Picture.
“Anatomy of a Fall” writer-director Justine Triet is the sole female filmmaker recognized in the Best Director category this year — also a surprise.
In the acting categories, there seemed to be a slight twist of musical chairs. Sterling K. Brown received a nomination for his role in “American Fiction,” while Charles Melton’s award-winning turn in “May December” was snubbed in the Best Supporting Actor category. Meanwhile, “Barbie” actress America Ferrera was a surprise, while “Ferrari” star Penelope Cruz didn’t make it in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Check out which films didn’t quite get their due.
