Weekly Commentary (Updated Oct. 3, 2024): Greig Fraser earned his first Academy Award for his breathtaking cinematography in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” (2022). As we look ahead to the upcoming awards season, Fraser’s stunning visuals—characterized by sweeping aerial shots, Timothée Chalamet riding massive sandworms, and a mesmerizing color palette—still leave an undeniable impression.

With high-profile projects like “Gladiator 2,” “Blitz” and “A Complete Unknown” on the horizon, it would be surprising not to see Fraser, at minimum, in the mix for another nomination, especially given the Cinematographers Branch’s track record of recognizing such artistry.

About the Academy Awards

The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, is Hollywood’s most prestigious artistic award in the film industry. Since 1927, nominees and winners have been selected by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Seventeen branches are represented within the nearly 10,000-person membership. The branches are actors, associates, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, documentary, executives, film editors, makeup and hairstylists, marketing and public relations, members-at-large, members-at-large (artists’ representatives), music, producers, production design, short films and feature animation, sound, visual effects and writers.
