Instead, the CDU/CSU plummeted to historic lows, gathering just over 24% of the vote compared to the centre-left SPD's 25.7%. So what might a post-Merkel Germany look like? And can French politicians learn anything from the experience as they prepare for presidential elections in April of 2022? Leo Klimm, a German journalist based in France, joined us for Perspective.

A 36-year-old man will appear in court later charged with the murder of primary school teacher Sabina Nessa. Koci Selamaj, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was arrested in the seaside town in the early hours of Sunday, and a light-coloured Nissan Micra was seized in a residential street around half a mile away. Ms Nessa was killed as she walked through Cator Park in Kidbrooke, southeast London, on her way to meet a friend on 17 September.

President Joe Biden has received his Covid-19 booster shot, days after federal regulators recommended a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for Americans age 65 or older. “The most important thing we need to do is get more people vaccinated,” Mr Biden said before getting the booster, adding that he did not have side effects after his first or second shots. Mr Biden, 78, got his first shot on December 21 and his second dose three weeks later, on January 11, along with his wife, Jill Biden.
