22-year-old dead, five others injured after three-vehicle wreck near Elkhart

ANDERSON COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – A 22-year-old is dead and five people, including a 1-year-old, are injured after a wreck in Anderson County on Saturday.

A preliminary crash report from DPS said that a vehicle traveling south on US 287 less than a mile south of Elkhart around 6:18 p.m. rear-ended another vehicle, causing it to go into the northbound lane where it hit a a 2007 Ford Taurus head-on.

The passenger of the Taurus, identified as 22-year-old Mary Merlino of Mineola, died at the scene. The other two occupants of the car, including an infant, were taken to local hospitals.

The investigation is ongoing, DPS said.
