24: Legacy has been cancelled by Fox after just one season

Fox has swung the axe on spinoff 24: Legacy after just one season.

The network will instead explore future iterations of the long-running espionage drama built around the real-time storytelling format.

While receiving initial critical acclaim, 24: Legacy struggled to pull in the ratings which has seen producers - including Howard Gordon and Evan Katz - hard at work on a format shakeup to revitalise the series which originally began in 2001.

Replacing Kiefer Sutherland in the lead role was Corey Hawkins who played military war hero Eric Carter alongside a cast including Miranda Otto and Jimmy Smits.

FOX CEO Dana Walden stated: “We were so happy with the creative on [the] show. We think Corey did a great job - replacing Jack Bauer was no easy feat.”

Following 24: Legacy's cancellation, it seems the stage is now set for Hawkins to return as Heath in The Walking Dead after his character's fate was left open-ended in the AMC series' latest season.

The fate of Fox's other revival - Prison Break - still remains in the balance, while it was recently announced that The X-Files would be returning for yet another limited run.
