The 25 Best Running Shoes for All Kinds of Runners
Wherever you are on your fitness journey—prepping for your first race, working toward a marathon, or simply running for fun—the right running shoes can make an impact. But finding the best running shoe can feel like searching for other hard-to-find pieces, Goldilocks trial and error included. "Just like looking for the perfect pair of jeans, the right pair of running shoes will vary depending on what you want to use them for, how you want to feel, and your preferred fit," Bekah Broe, director of performance footwear at Hoka, says.
In the vast and jargon-filled world of running shoes, Broe says a few factors can usually lead you toward the best pairs. "A high-quality running shoe will often have a higher price tag ($120+) than a lower-quality counterpart," she says. And in the design, "the midsole (foam) and upper materials (what wraps around your foot to provide structure and comfort) are specifically engineered to balance weight with structure, comfort, and durability."
As for what not to look for, keep your running shoes separate from your dance cardio or Tabata sneakers. "In HIIT training, you want to make sure your shoe has a flat base—no heel, which most running shoes have," Nike trainer Lauren Schramm tells BAZAAR.com. "It's great for your running stride and not so great for your functional HIIT movements. I always advise clients to invest in a pair of training shoes for their workouts to prevent injury, like rolling their ankles in lateral movements—which can happen if you train in a running shoe."
There's little replacing the tailored advice you can get from an in-person specialist; at a running specialty store, Broe says, you can get personalized advice on running shoes suited to your gait type and running style. Premium running shoes are also a few clicks away with the help of experts and enthusiastic reviewers. So before you hit the track, treadmill, trail, or road, update your gear with the 25 best running shoes for women ahead.

Clifton 8 Running Shoe
Hoka
amazon.com
$300.00
Ask any runner which running shoe they suggest for casual runs or first-time races, and they'll likely point you toward the Hoka Clifton 8. Broe is one of those runners, adding, "I like to feel supported but not encumbered, so I’ll opt for a shoe that has a moderate amount of cushioning, a soft but structured upper, and just enough outsole coverage (rubber) for durability like the Clifton 8."

Air Zoom Pegasus 38 Women's Road Running Shoe
Nike
nike.com
$120.00
Schramm is working her way up to running between three and six miles at a time between her training sessions. She's a fan of these Nike sneakers for those runs, plus other activities, because they're comfortable without too much cushioning. "I’m always in some sort of activewear, especially in the summer, so they are my go-tos for errands and dog walks in addition to my runs," she says. "They are comfortable enough to walk around in all day, and help me to feel strong and stable while I’m racking up a few miles. Sometimes I have to jog over cobblestones in the NYC streets, and these shoes provide the stability I’m looking for with a wider base at the toes."

Unisex XT-6 Sportstyle Low Top Sneaker
Salomon

While the chunky white design does pair well with '90s denim and slouchy suiting, it's also equipped for heavy-duty runs—and there aren't cumbersome laces to retie. "You have a good amount of cushioning and fantastic grip," one reviewer raves. "I'm looking forward to years of hard use with these as well. Love them!" Adds another, "These shoes are truly amazing. The lacing system is elite—no more tying shoes and easy on-off with one hand. I can wear these shoes in an urban setting or also on a hike."

Kinvara 13 Running Shoe
Saucony
nordstrom.com
$120.00
This update to a well-loved Saucony model now includes an even lighter upper with the same supportive sole. Take it from a reviewer who's worn several models—this one is the best. "I've been running in Kinvaras since version 1 and this is one of the best yet," they write. "Last year's model was so-so...I'm so happy with the 13s! It's a good fit, yet roomy enough in the toe box. The upper material is supportive, but very breathable, and the cushioning is ample, but somewhat minimal, as to be expected of a Kinvara." This style runs small, so reviewers suggest ordering a size larger than your usual.
