Billionaire preppers are building underground bunkers in a bid to survive a pending apocalypse. But what's a simple millionaire prepper—a person with more means than the average individual but not enough money to build a large and lavish underground bunker—to do? Purchasing a largely self-sustaining off-grid camper is one such option.

Yes, it's a bit of a gamble, because the apocalypse you're prepping for may make it impossible to live above ground. On the plus side, though, you can enjoy your off-grid rig even before the world descends into chaos. (Imagine trying to have a good time in an underground bunker knowing everyone else is still enjoying the pleasures of a pre-apocalyptic Earth.) And if you have $250,000 to drop on such a tool, consider the Lightship AE.1 Cosmos Edition.

The AE.1, which sleeps up to four and includes a bathroom, is the production version of the L1 camper that Lightship revealed more than a year ago. Like its prototype predecessor, the AE.1 is available with a large-capacity battery pack and integrated electric drive motor to help take some of the proverbial load off the fanny of the vehicle tasked with towing it. Along with helping propel the AE.1 forward, the drive motor also slows the camper down, quite literally taking some of the heat off the tow vehicle's braking system.

When it's not powering the drive motor, the 77.0-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack powers the various accouterments of the AE.1 itself. This includes the likes of an HVAC system and kitchen appliances such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, oven, and stove. Though Lightship intends to build just 50 AE.1 Cosmos Editions, the company eventually plans to mass produce the camper in three—presumably less pricey— trims dubbed Atmos, Panos, and Terros.

There's no word on when the rest of the AE.1 line is set to enter production, but Lightship claims the first AE.1 Cosmos Editions are due to arrive in summer 2025. Prepare accordingly.
